Belle’s Weekly Roundup: May 31, 2013

That moment where your just killing time on Pinterest, and then you read something that cuts you to the quick.

1) Oprah gave the commencement speech at Harvard this week and it is a doozy.  She talks about her life long dream of having a degree from Harvard and how humbling the criticism of her OWN network was.  She also implores the graduates to “skip Facebook.”   You can watch it at HuffPo, or read Shape’s rundown of the speech instead.

2) This week, someone asked me if I could recommend a handbag hanger, a metal weight that allows you to hang your purse of the side of the table instead of setting it on the floor.  Corporette endorses them, but I’ve never used one.  Have you?

3) I’ve been writing a feature for Forbes.com’s new Style File.  My column is called Style Arbitrage, and it’s essentially a longer version of the 10th Commandment posts.  Even though the Style File is new, there’s a lot of good content for professional women who love fashion.

4) Net-a-Porter is having it’s mid-year sale.  I didn’t find any clothing to buy, but I did find these incredibly cute See by Chloe sandals and this gorgeous Marc Jacobs scarf.  I also used the sale to stock up on intimates.  They had Calvin Klein’s “invisible” hipsters and thongs, and some fun undergarments from Elle MacPherson and Stella McCartney.

5) I’m always looking for ideas that will keep my productivity on track.  Victoria at VMac + Cheese had a great way for making sure your 15-minute breaks don’t become 45-minute oh.look.what.time.it.is breaks: timing yourself with this precious 15-minute hourglass from CB2.

6) Everyone has been sending me this Tumblr called Sh*t Bloggers Wear, a chronicle of the commonly featured items on fashion blogs.  Because once Atlantic-Pacific or The Glamourai carries a bag or wears a shoe, it’s only a matter of time before the blogger down the block has maxed out her credit card to buy (or begged her way into) the same designer item.

7) I can’t believe that designers are already selling pre-fall collections, but this Roksanda Ilincic dress has truly captured my heart.

8) Living alone has always suited me best, but I thought this LearnVest article about mistakes couples make when they move in together struck a chord.  And since living together is very common these days, I thought it was worth a share.

9) Mizhattan does some of the most stylish Polyvore sets in the blogosphere, and her latest creation has me positively agog over this opalescent pink Bobbi Brown nail polish.

10) Hello, lover.

I hope those See by Chloe sandals fit you better than they did me. I wanted so badly to love them, but they flopped off my feet.

  2. Ann S says:

Handbags in The City (Baltimore) includes a handbag hanger with every purchase. I probably would never have gone out and purchased one, but I now use it all the time. I do think it reduces the scuff factor. After you have plunked down a healthy chunk of change for a purse, anything to keep it looking good is a plus in my book!

  3. Shelley says:

I love my handbag hanger! I don’t have to hang my bag on the back of a chair (which seems unsafe) and I can keep it off of floors of restaurants and bars.

  4. Isn’t that hourglass great? Thanks so much for sharing my post! Hope you have a great weekend.

  5. Kim says:

First sentence – for the love of God, it is “you’re,” not “your.” You are.

  6. Julie says:

Ok, this Shit Bloggers Wear site is amazing. I’m a new fashion blogger and pretty much don’t have any of the “it” items. It baffles me how many bloggers have items I consider unattractive, like the Valentino “Rockstud” pumps. So ugly! So expensive!

    • Belle says:

The Rockstud can be cute, but in most cases it wears the woman. I bought a pair and felt overwhelmed, but on some women it really works.

That being said, don’t worry about the “it” items. If you truly love something, that’s different, but think of all the women with Pashli satchels who now need to upgrade to Celine luggage totes? I once had a blogger, a very famous one, tell me that she didn’t take women seriously if they mostly wore “generic mall clothes” but had a $2,500 bag and $900 shoes. She said it made them look like they were trying to “buy their way in.”

Also, it frustrates me how many bloggers who once focused on affordable clothing now tote purses that cost more than my rent. It’s why I respect Kendi Everyday, even though our styles really don’t mesh. She blogs about affordable clothes, sells affordable clothes at her store and doesn’t try to sell me a $75 dress while wearing $3,000 worth of accessories.

  7. Pancakes says:

I would never put my bag on the floor—it seems very unsanitary b/c your purse ends up in your chair, in your lap, on the bed, who knows.

I don’t use a handbag hanger, though, b/c usually, the table isn’t big enough, imo.

  8. mk says:

I’ve used the handbag hanger and had no problems. I agree with Pancakes that bags can become very unsanitary. My mom used to say the same about our book bags as kids–and when I thought about it, I stopped dropping mine on my bed all of the time! Eww. So the hanger is definitely worth a try if you don’t have an easy extra seat at a table on which to place your bag.

  9. Kay says:

I have a handbag hanger that I got at Claire’s (of all places) years ago for around $3. It’s pretty handy to have and easy to just slip into a pocket of your bag.

  10. LO says:

My handbag hanger (I call it a purse hook, but whatever) always gets compliments from people–guys, gals, waiters, etc. I’m always surprised at how many people haven’t seen them before–especially since this is my second one to own. Not only does it keep your purse off the floor, but keeps it safe from being snatched off the back of a chair.

  11. Morgan says:

I’m a new reader, and catching up… #10 that beauty, is currently wicked marked down.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
