Ask Belle: Quick Updos for Busy Women

May 6, 2013

Belle,

Your hair always looks so polished in your Instagram photos.  It kind of inspired me to buy a set of hot rollers, and I’ve been happy with the results even though I need more practice with them.  Do you have some suggestions for easy hairstyles, like updos, that don’t take very long?

My toddler doesn’t give me much time to get ready, and with my clerkship starting next month, I need some quick hairdo ideas.

Sincerely, Amy

I’ve written before about easy updos, but you can never over-share good advice.

The first place to stop is The Small Things Blog.  Kate has a number of chic and easy hair tutorials.  The chignon above is my favorite.  I’ve gotten so good at it, that I can put it together in less than 10-minutes.

Cup of Jo sometimes features hair tutorials.  The Gibson Roll is the one I’ve adopted into my regular rotation.

Lastly, since I’m always searching for easy hair styles, I compile them on my Pinterest page.  This bouncy ponytail is much-loved.  This sleek updo is great for ladies with long hair.  And this twisted updo can be modified for hair of any length.

As for tools, I think a good dry shampoo, some texturizing spray and a solid hold hairspray are critical.  The products that I linked to are my favorites.

Belle, could you please tell us more about your day-to-day hair routine? You mention updos and bouncy ponytails quite often, and I’m interested to know how much time you spend on an average morning. Would also love to see pics in your instagram (though I realize that may be challenging without showing your face!)

I try to be up, showered, blow dried, makeup-ed and out the door in 55 minutes. The only thing that makes that possible is hot rollers. I can put on my makeup while the rollers do my hair.

Can you write a post on hair accessories? On days (like today), when I just throw my hair up into an easy bun, I’d love some chic head bands or accessories to throw in so to make my style look a little bit more put together!

Ideas for curly hair? Thanks so much.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
