Two Ways: Leather Ankle Boots

Dec 27, 2012

Shoes: Ann Taylor Flora Booties ($228 + 50% off)

From Left, Earring: Ralph Lauren Gold Tone Drops ($28) Bracelet: Karen London Wave Bangle ($120) Bag: Ada Seamed Satchel ($206) Coat: Green Woolen Coat ($188) Tights: Ralph Lauren Opaque ($18) Sweater: Donna Karan Cowl Sweater ($525) Skirt: No. 2 Pencil Skirt ($60)

From Right, Necklace: Frame of Mind Necklace ($85) Bag: Snake Trim Boxy Bag ($56) Shirt: Haute Hippie Button Down ($290) Coat: Majesty Peacoat ($278) Sweater: Collection Cashmere Polka Dot Sweater ($180 + 25% off) Jeans: Paige Skyline Denim ($189)

For the Office.  I’ve posted similar outfits to this one a few times, so I apologize if I’m starting to sound like a broken record.  I just love mixing shades of ivory and brown, because if the pieces fit well, it can be a very expensive looking pairing (even when it’s not).  There’s something very clean and simple about it.

If the Donna Karan sweater makes your wallet convulse in pain (and that’s the sale price!), this BCBG sweater is less than one-third the cost (It’s also more fitted.).  And this Jones of New York version is $79 with a bit of a slouchy fit.  And here’s a similar sweater in plus size.

Following the two-out-of-three legwear rule, I matched the brown tights to the boots for a sleek leg line.  I chose the one button coat to accommodate the fuller neckline of the sweater.  I like the look of this coat, but I hear conflicting assessments about the quality of Romwe products, so I can’t endorse the coat itself.  If you want a long green coat from a more reliable maker, try this one from Land’s End.

The jewelry is pretty simple: a gold-tone drop in a simple shape and a cool wooden bracelet.  If this one is a bit out of your price range, here is a less expensive set of four wood bangles.  As for the purse, this is a VERY close copy of the J.Crew Biennial satchel, which was a copy of the Modalu Pippa bag.  Pockets galore–also comes in tan for under-$200.

For the makeup, I would apply a chocolate brown liner and a taupe shadow with a berry-colored gloss.  For the hair, I would style it up in something loose or in a low bun (cowl neck sweaters destroy my hairstyle when I wear it down).

For the Weekend.  Sadly, the navy and purple dot sweater has sold out online since I wrote the post yesterday.  I think a few of the J.Crew stores probably still have a few, but this navy and white dot is in the same family.

The mixing of the pointed collar shirt, the crewneck/printed sweater and the collar-length, jeweled necklace comes from Rosa Loves DC’s Instagram.  If you’re not following, you should be.

The skinny jeans could be left out of the boot or tucked in–I like the details on the top of the boot, so I’d tuck.  This look isn’t for everyone though, it’s the kind of thing you try and know instantly whether you can or cannot pull it off.  Sometimes it’s about body shape, other times it’s about style, mostly it’s about attitude.

The coat is a basic tan peacoat.  If you like it, wait a few weeks, because J.Crew will have another outerwear sale after the New Year–they always do, usually right after I pay full price for a coat.  If you’re just looking for a peacoat, this one from Target comes in 13 colors, is 61% wool and costs under-$40.

For the hair, I would wear it down in light waves or curled iron and teased at the crown.  For the makeup, a nude wash over the lids with a bit of purple would be nice.  Maybe a light gloss or some lip tint in the rosy color of your choice.

A question for the group that relates to the Donna Karen Sweater: I've been eyeing various sweaters like this (chunky cowl neck in cream and light brown shades) but haven't been able to pull the trigger because I'm just not sure what my price point should be. I know this is a piece I will wear often and for many seasons but…are sweaters worth splurging on? I've been burned before — spending $300 on a sweater that pills and loses shape after one year of wear — so I'm hesitant to drop $500 on a sweater I'm not sure will last more than a year. I've also found cheaper options at Target that I love but that shed too much and I end up giving away after two wears. Has anyone found specific brands that last?

One of my favorite things about your recommendations is that you give a suggestion and then alternates for different body shapes or price points. I've been wanting an inexpensive peacoat just for fun, and I think the Target one will fit the bill.

What is the two-out-of-three legwear rule?

Thanks for the mention Belle. Happy New Year.

Ms. C: Try the BCBG sweater mentioned in the post. I bought that one and it's pretty great for the price.
