Belle's Weekly Favorites–November 19, 2012

Nov 19, 2012

1. theBalm Mary Lou-manizer ($24) // 2. Club Monaco Miley Sweater ($229) and Grace Sweater ($130) // 3. K. Amato Jasper Mixed Bead Necklace ($100) // 4. Burgundy Peplum Dress ($79) // 5. Faux Fur Infinity Scarf ($88) // 6. Collette Dinnigan Cotton Lace Dress ($355)

One.  I received this luminizing powder in my November Birchbox, and it is remarkable.  Unlike so many products which give skin an unnatural glow by bathing it in white talcum powder, this luminizer uses a darker pigment with gold shimmer.  The powder can also be used as an eyeshadow and contour.  I’ve used it every day since I received it, and it’s officially my new favorite product.

I also like this luminizer from Mally Beauty.  If you prefer a liquid highlighter, my favorite is Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Touche Eclat ($40) but I’ve been told the e.l.f Concealer and Highlighter is just as good at $3.

Two.  Club Monaco has some fantastic sweaters this season.  I love the slouchy Miley sweater in bold teal.  But my favorite is the Grace sweater, which has a chiffon back and satin shoulder patches.  Mixing wool textures with softer fabrics like chiffon is a big trend this season.  If you like it, you should also look at this cardigan from Halogen or this cowl neck sweater from Quotation.

Three.  This necklace strikes the right balance between chunky and sleek.  The beads are of various sizes and colors, making the combination interesting but not overwhelming.  It’s a great piece to wear over simple blouses or sweaters to give them extra oomph.

Looking for a similar necklace in a lower price point?  This bead and chain necklace from K. Amato is $72, this simple hematite strand is $45 and this iridescent layered necklace from Forever 21 is under-$15.

Four.  This is a great sleek dress at a fantastic price.  I love the architectural neckline and the cap sleeve.  Dorothy Perkins offers a number of inexpensive dresses that would make lovely additions to a work wardrobe.  I like this simple navy dress quite a lot, and this long sleeved dress with a folded neckline.

Five.  I’ve been craving a fur vest, but I think a fur scarf might be a more subtle addition to my closet.  It would look sublime over a crewneck ivory knit or black sweater.  If you’d like a darker color, this scarf from Vince Camuto looks lush and chic.

Six.  This lace dress is flirty and fun, and since it’s navy, you could wear it year round.  It looks like the perfect party dress.  Looking for a navy lace frock that costs a bit less?  This form-fitting dress is $179, and this dress has a fuller skirt and long sleeves for $128. Need a plus size? Try this pretty dress.

    Hi Belle,

I notice that you reference Dorothy Perkins a lot in your different stylings. I was wondering if you've bought from the store and what you thought of the quality? How is the return policy?

    Thank you!

  2. JK says:

AGREE re: the luminizing powder. I got it in my October Birchbox and have used it everyday since, as well!

  3. Rachel says:

I second Jenny's question – Dorothy Perkins has so many cute, affordable things, but I've always wondered about the quality. I've also heard terrible things about their shipping and returns/customer service in general.

  4. Emalie says:

Belle, I've been SO afraid that you'd succumb to the furry/hairy vest trend! I was immensely relieved to see your shift to the fur infinity scarf! I like that SOOOO much better! WAY less cave man-esque! I recently was wandering the mall and came across this faux fur headband! Granted, quality of this, probably not very durable, but I liked the idea and thought you might too!

  5. Belle says:

RE Dorothy Perkins: I've heard some returns horror stories. To the point when I ordered a dress I didn't like, I just sold it for a little less than what I paid rather than deal.

As for the quality, I've had really good luck. I've liked almost everything I ordered, but sizes can be tricky, so I always size up and go to the tailor.

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
