Hurricane Sandy Donations Update

Nov 2, 2012

Hi Ladies,

Some friends of mine who live in Queens and Brooklyn are organizing a relief drop in Staten Island, an area hard hit and mostly neglected by other relief efforts.  The borough president has called for donations, so these folks are planning to purchase blankets, clothes, food, water and other supplies for delivery to designated location in Staten Island.

They’re looking to raise $5,000, and they’re a little more than halfway to their goal.  So if you have $10 to spare, I hope you’ll donate to some neighbors helping neighbors.

xoxo

Thanks for posting this – my great aunt just moved back to MT from Staten Islamd, but hadn't yet sold her house there. It is now of course destroyed. Happy she's safe, but so devastated for her neighbors and friends there. I'm grateful for a way to be able to directly help the,!

Are there any fundraisers going on in DC for drop off places. I want to help!

  3. Belle says:

Joanna-I think the reason fundraisers like the one I posted a link to work is because these ppl live close by and have immediate access to goods. Also, once they dropped off their delivery, they were able to ask people at the donation center what they needed, and were able to go pick up those supplies.

By the time goods collected outside of NY/NJ were gathered, organized, and transported, they probably wouldn't be needed any longer or would not be the right kind of donations. It's a quickly evolving situation, so if you want to contribute I think it's best to find a charity on the ground or one accepting cash.

  4. Joanna says:

Thanks Belle. I am organizing fundraiser at a local bar in Adams Morgan. They will offer drink specials for an entrance price and we will donate the proceeds to the Red Cross!

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
