Outfit Inspiration: Double the Animal Print

Oct 24, 2012

Sweater: J.CREW Tippi in Sandstone ($80) Pants: Iris & Ink Crepe Straight Leg Pants ($84) Scarf: Stella & Dot Animal Print Scarf ($59) Shoes: JC Penney Giraffe Pumps ($35) Lipstick: Rimmel London Kate ($5) Earrings: Urban Glitz Studs ($24) Rings: Teardrop Silhouette Ring ($145) and Kylie Druzy Ring ($80) Bag: 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli Satchel ($895)

Of all the outfits that I have featured on Pinterest, this one has garnered the largest number of repins.  And what’s not to love about an ensemble that combines bright orange pants, a simple sweater and two kinds of animal print?

Let’s start with the detail that makes this outfit tricky for a lot of women to reproduce: the double animal print.  For the outfit in the photo, the stylist paired cheetah-print shoes with a leopard-print scarf.  While I stuck with the leopard scarf, I chose something a bit more distinct for the shoes–giraffe print.

The print on these pumps is larger and incorporates more dark brown.  I think that emphasizes the differences in the prints more so than the cheetah.  Want cheetah? Check out these under-$100 Calvin Kleins.

The sweater is a simple autumn tan, but you could also wear a camel sweater if you think the lighter piece will wash you out.  The trousers are a vibrant Manadarin orange, which was so hot this year and works well with fall hues.  If you’re looking for the actual pant in the inspiration photo, they’re from Loft and cost $49.  If you like the look of the orange but not the slim, short cut (that would be me), these slightly-flared orange trousers from the Gap are amazing.

Think you might need a jacket?  A trench would be the perfect piece of outerwear or choose a camel blazer for the office.

To accessorize such a bold look, you need to stick close to the neutral brown color palette in the sweater and shoes.  I chose this shockingly gorgeous (and expensive) Pashli satchel in chocolate brown.  If you’d like something in a more reasonable price point, this satchel from Target has some interesting details and this flap satchel from Jones of New York is a classic.

Even though there is no jewelry visible in the photo, I paired a delicate teardrop ring with a bold druzy one.  (I love the hollowed out look.)  I also selected these simple studs.  The gold matches the jewelry and the crystals coordinate with the grey tones in the ring.

Lastly, in my opinion, the look would simply not be complete without the bright red lip.  I chose an inexpensive Rimmel lipstick, but if you want to invest in a great red, I like MAC Ruby Woo. And for the true red lover, try MAC’s pro palette with six gorgeous crimson shades. Have an aversion to red?  Try a sheer plum color instead like Clinique Black Honey.

I love this look – and must have missed your pin. I have some cute bright orange cords, so I think I'm going to recreate this look with them and a leopard flat to make it more casual.

Belle I absolutely adore this look! I was thinking earlier today how I could invest a little extra cash I received. All of these pieces could go a really long way in my wardrobe. Thank you!

I'm wearing the Loft ankle pants in purple right now. I have them in orange (I almost almost wore today), black, and plaid. They fit awesome.

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
