Two Ways: White Tee Shirt

Jul 10, 2012

T-Shirt: This morning’s shirt was by Velvet and costs $35, this shirt is from my favorite brand Splendid and costs $65.

From Left, Earrings: Hammered Stud ($20) Bag: ALDO Dockwiller ($50)  Shoe: Ivanka Cleor Pump ($120) Necklace: Bubble Necklace ($150) Skirt: Oval Print Pencil Skirt ($90)

From Right, Earrings: Carobella Hoops ($29) Sunglasses: Ghia Sunglasses ($98) Bag: Modekugen Bag ($85, overseas vendor) Shoes: VC Frisco Flat ($98) Scarf: Tri-Color Scarf ($57) Jeans: Trouser Jeans ($88)

Polyvore Set Here.

For Casual Friday.  I love a t-shirt with a pencil skirt in the summer.  It’s easy, it’s comfortable and it’s appropriate for sweltering hot days.  Also, if I needed to, I could add a white or navy blazer to this outfit.

Isn’t this skirt fantastic?  I usually won’t add any items that aren’t Polyvore-ready (no model, no background) to my sets, but this oval-print skirt from Talbot’s is just too chic to pass up.  I love the multi-colored chain pattern.

I am seeing this J.Crew Bubble Necklace all over D.C. this summer, but if $150 is a little rich for your blood, Lori’s Shoes has a $43 knock-off that comes in orange.  The simples studs and perforated bag continue the simple, chic vibe and the basic pump keeps the look office appropriate.  You could also add a ring if you like, perhaps this navy enamel and gold vermeil ring.

For the hair, I would wear it down with a bit of curl at the ends.  I would wear a pink lip gloss with a pop of pink blush on my cheeks and taupe eye-shadow.

For Traveling.  Last weekend, I headed up to the Big Apple to do some sightseeing and a whole lot of eating with a friend.  We took the train, and let me just say that the clothing choices on Amtrak make airline passengers look like they were dressed by Anna Wintour.  I’ve never seen so many filthy flip-flops and pajama pants in one place, and my train was leaving at noon!

Dressing up just a little bit when you travel can make the whole experience just that much more pleasant.  I always feel a little bit better when I look nice, and a pair of trouser jeans (not to snug) and a comfortable cotton tee are just the ticket.  I also added a stylish printed scarf to help keep me warm and dress up the basic t-shirt and jeans.

For the accessories, I chose this awesome orange bag.  The bag is gorgeous for under $100, but the company that sells it is in Sweden and it ships from Hong Kong, so I won’t pretend to know what that might cost.  I also added a studded flat, sunglasses and a pair of hoop earrings.

For the hair, I would pull it up into a messy bun.  And I would keep the makeup simple with a berry-colored blush, some gold eye-shadow, defined eyebrows, black mascara and a clear gloss.

Love both of these ideas for a plain white tee. I want to travel somewhere just so I can create a similar outfit, and actually look chic on a plane.

Belle, I need your help! And this post reminded me that I needed some fashion savvy advice on a new bag I got. My sister gave me an “hermes” orange color purse (not the brand, it just describes the color to a T), and I have no idea what to carry it with – this post will be a great first step with it. I love the idea of a bright purse I just lack the confidence to pair it with an outfit and not feel like I've done something terribly wrong… not Vera Bradley backpack wrong, but headed in that way. Thanks!

  3. Ellen says:

I love both looks. Do you know where to get the scarf in the color you posted? I followed the link but it only seems to be available in pastels.

  4. Airlie says:

I often take Amtrak between DC and NYC. The people watching on the train and at Union and Penn Station is always entertaining. People wear the most awful things!

You can also get a similar statement necklace in a few different colors here: https://www.ilycouture.com/product_p/1100.htm

Just got the turquoise and love love love it.

Notes re the J Crew “Bubble Necklace”-
    1) It's heavy. Sometimes I have to take mine off at my desk to give my neck a break.
    2) You'll jingle a little when you walk.

If you can get past those two (I do!), eBay is a great source for the real deal or a knockoff. J Crew sold this necklace a few years ago too, but I think it was a flop back then. That means there are some colors of the “real” necklace available on eBay that aren't sold by J Crew currently.

Is it weird that I'm proud that I bought the real version on eBay for $20 before it was cool?

Love the look for travel! Thanks for sharing. I always find dressing for travel to be a bit of a challenge, just because I never know what to expect and want to be prepared (case in point, my last trip…9 hour delay in the Atlanta airport).

  8. Beth says:

I love to always have a pashmina or some scarf on hand for when travelling, so versitile! and love the trouser jeans, I had almost forgotten that I had a pair in my closet until this post, thanks Belle!

  9. A says:

I think this is my favourite 'two-ways' so far, thank you!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
