It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.
Inside the reader mail bag there are questions about summer beauty, hiring a personal shopper, navigating a sudden breakouts, and more. Let’s dig in!
And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
Belle, what are your feelings on the material for the Hill Staffer dress? I always steer clear of the polyester type shiny material for work? I would love to know if you think it is work appropriate as I have plenty of those types of dresses already. Thanks!
Nancy-It's tough to tell how much of the sheen is camera flash and how much would be visible in natural light. That being said, I am generally not a fan of fabric that gives the dresses a sheen.
I own the RL dress. It's beautiful, and not too shiny, but I can't wear it to my office because it's clingy. The cling factor makes it super flattering for dates (my husband loves this dress), but I can't pull it off as work wear.
I agree with BB's comment. I hope I don't seem silly for posting this, but I wore a Ralph Lauren dress similar to the one Belle posted for this photo shoot in case you want to see how the material would look in a different setting: https://thehill.com/capital-living/173451-50-most-beautiful-people-2011-washington-congress-capitol?start=23
I specifically chose it for the way the color would pop on camera, but didn't wear it at all while I worked on the Hill because of the way it fit all around. Hope that helps!

I love all these dresses!
