SOS: Body Lotion, Part II

Jun 11, 2012

Several weeks ago, I wrote about my love of Kiehl’s Creme de Corps ($48).  Recently, a reader wrote in to recommend a less expensive alternative, Tree Hut Extra-Rich Shea Lotion ($7).  So I thought I would give it a try.

I continue emptying my wallet for Creme de Corps because it moisturizes so easily and cleanly.  I don’t need to pile it on like most drugstore brands, and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy.  And equally important, it doesn’t leave my skin with a chemical or treacly smell after I apply it.

The Tree Hut moisturizer is certainly rich in texture.  It moisturizes well, and the softness doesn’t fade by mid-afternoon like it does with so many lotions.  I purchased the Almond & Honey Shea Lotion scent as well as the regular Shea Body Butter.  The Almond & Honey had a nice scent, but the body butter made my skin smell like coffee grounds.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive body lotion with a lot of oomph, the Tree Hut Extra-Rich Lotion is a good choice.  However, I will continue to purchase my Creme de Corps on eBay.  Some addictions are not easily broken.

I tried the Creme de Corps after you posted about it and also loved how nongreasy as well as moisturizing it is. Is the Tree Hut similarly nongreasy? Also, does the almond and honey have a strong and/or enduring scent? (I'm not a fan of strongly scented lotions.) Thanks so much!

Belle, have you tried the creme de corps body wash or body scrub before? I had some samples of those that I really liked – but I'm not sure if I'm sold on them after one test wash each.

Thanks for the alternative… There is no way that I can possibly justify spending $50 on lotion.

I LOOOVVVVVEEEE Creme de Corps but think I may have found something better! AHAVA butter sea salt scrub and dry mist oil. AHAVA products use the minerals from the Dead Sea (lots of their products say “with mineral oil” which originally made me scared it was mineral oil, the greasy stuff that comes from petruleum, but rest assured, it just means minerals from the Dead Sea). The butter salt scrub is the consistency of a body butter lotion, you lather yourself up pre-shower, scrub a little to work the salt exfoliation in, then just shower it off and you not only have the incredible exfoliation, but you also have the same amount of moisture a body butter would give you, but none of greasyness. For max efficiency I even use it as a rich shaving cream. Then, post shower, follow it up with the best product in the world, the dry mist oil, (go EASY on it!), if you spray too much you'll be an oil slick, if you do just a few light sprays, it will immediately soak in and give you 24hr (yes, 24! hrs!) mositure. And I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like in the summer, no matter what lotion I use, or when I use it, even the night before, the second I step out into DC heat, it just sweats right out of me making my legs a nasty greasy mess. This is the only product I've ever used that doesn't do that!
I definitely vouch for the oil spray and the butter salt scrub, those get A++++s, the body lotion I'd say is a A-, creme de corps is better but Ahava is cheaper, the body wash and facial products I'd say aren't impressive at all, just standard.

And for the ? about the Creme de Corps body wash and body scrub, I've tried both, I say they are good products, I always buy my Creme de Corps in gift packs that come with the wash and scrub from Bloomingdales b/c they are a much better value than buying the lotion seperately, and like the washes, but wouldn't buy them on their own b/c they aren't miracle workers like lotion is.

Unlike you, the smell of Creme de Corps really bothers me! I have excema, and was recommended CeraVe mosturizing cream by a dermatologist. It is not fancy, but I love that it isn't scented and is the only moisturizer I have used that I only have to apply once daily! I really recommend it if you have dry skin, maybe in the DC winters? In the central part of the country it is available at Walgreens and Target.

  6. Belle says:

Becca-Cerave is a good product. And you're right, it has no smell.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
