Polyvore Set Here.

One of the things that I love most about summertime is that I get to wear sandals.  I get to flash my perfect pedicure and strut on the streets in comfort and style.  But cheap, plastic flip flops that cost less than a salad from Sweetgreen are not sandals.  There a sign of the coming apocalypse.  (Don’t believe me? Consider the the flip-flap-flopping on the marble floors of the Capitol sounds exactly like hoof beats.)

I like a nice structured sandal.  I like something with a little style and a little attitude.  And I don’t like to spend a lot of money on my sandals, because I want to be able to wear them to death and toss them at the end of the season.  After all, I’m just going to want new ones next year.

Whether you can wear sandals to work depends solely on the conservative nature of your office.  I can wear bare toes during recess or on casual Friday.  You may be able to wear them every day, you may never be able to wear them.

Of the pairs above the only one that I would even consider wearing to a conservative office, even on casual Friday, would be the second pair from Zara.  They have a covered toe and an ankle strap and a heel cover, so they are a bit more conservative.  Zara also makes a similar sandal (no heel cover) in other colors.  I’ve been commuting in the gold jelly shoe.  I like them, but you need a gel insole or else they are hard on your feet after an hour or so.

Do you have a favorite summer sandal?  And please, don’t say Reefs or Rainbows, I might suffer a stroke.

As an equestrian, I am insulted that you think the awful thwacking of flip flops sounds the same as horse hooves. The latter is much less jarring and awful.

  2. Belle says:

E: My apologies to horses everywhere.

  3. Casey says:

I've had great luck with sandals from a brand called 'beach club” or “BC” – i forget the exact name, but they have a big BC as the logo from Nordstrom – they're from the BP shoes section – i got my gladiators about 3 years ago and they've held up wonderfully, are super comfy and just all around awesome. I'm looking to get a new pair though, just for a change of color and i'm looking at the DV “archer” – does any one have these, and if so, can any one speak to thier comfort?

  4. L says:

These are all pretty. Too bad I have ugly feet and really, really dislike wearing sandals.

I plan to teach my future children that “flip flops are not real shoes.” I can already hear their sweet voices repeating that to their flip-flop-wearing friends on the playground.

  5. Amanda says:

DV archer sandal- I own these totally not comfortable. Maybe thats just me but the ankle strap and toe thong are all connected making the straps wonky if they're not perfectly in place. Also they're pretty uncomfortable to walk in, your foot slides forward leaving quite a bit of space between your heel and the heel cover. I wear a 7.5 I tried a size smaller after buying them and there was no difference. Maybe its just me though!

  6. Katie says:

I found a great pair from cringe Old Navy, they're gold with a loopy kind of design. Target also has tons of great sandals for cheap.

  7. Govvie says:

ugh, I bought a pair at Old Navy – probably my first purchase there in 10 years – and they fell apart after a couple of wearings.

  8. nicci says:

Yes! I bought a pair of gold DKNY Seaford rubber-soled T-strap sandals in 2009 and it was the best $59 I've ever spent. The style is no longer available but I would buy another DKNY rubber-soled sandal in a heartbeat. These are the sandals I own: https://www.ebay.com/itm/DKNY-Seaford-Strappy-Black-Patent-Leather-Ankle-Strap-Sandals-Gently-Worn-EUC-6-/280874498402?pt=US_Women_s_Shoes&hash=item41656cb962 (except in gold). I've walked miles in them and had nary a blister or sore heel. I wouldn't wear them to work but they are a total workshorse sandal. For comfy sandals that are more dressy, I've had great luck with wedges from Clarks.

  9. Rebecca says:

I just got the turquoise hembre sandals from Aldo. I'm loving the color. They're also easy to dress up or down. Although I don't think I'd wear them in the office.

  10. dreama says:

    uuuuuh isn't #4 a flip flop?

  11. Belle says:

Dreama: No, it's a leather thong sandal. The leather is a small but important difference. I thought some women might like a cheap plastic crap alternative because thong sandals are more comfortable for some women.

  12. Jackie says:

One of the things I like most about about summer is breaking out my assortment of jack Rogers. I wear them out, commute in them, and sometimes I don't even take them off once I get to work. I have a feeling these are not Belle approved.

  13. aec says:

    Seychelles are the best.

  14. Katherine says:

I have yet to find a sandal that I could call “comfortable.” I have narrow feet with high arches. Naturalizer is the only company who even tries to make a cute narrow sandal but even those don't have enough support for my pathetic feet. I feel sorry for myself about it every summer.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
