Happy Hour: Wine RIOT!

May 3, 2012

Before we begin, allow me to announce a scheduling change.  I was going to announce the winner of the Birchbox giveaway today, but my Internet was out last night, and I couldn’t access the random number generator that I usually use to choose winners.  So the Birchbox polish winners will be announced tomorrow.

Also, the reason Happy Hour is running today is because I am taking tomorrow off so that I can make some structural improvements to the site. I’m going to be setting up an introductory page for new readers, trying to improve the search function and the archive, and making some changes to the sidebar and header. I think that earns me a day off, right?  Alright, let’s talk about Wine RIOT!

I know zero, and I mean zero, about wine.  I have just never warmed up to the libation and the snobby, high-faluting attitude of many wine drinkers has done nothing to improve my feelings on the drink.  So I sip Champagne and Bourbon and to hell with all of your Malbecs, Rieslings, Chardonnays and the rest.  However, this weekend, I will be attending the local Wine RIOT! in the hopes of at least learning enough about wine that I won’t be embarrassed at dinner parties when the host asks which wine I would like.  You can only dodge that question so many times.

Wine RIOT! is a wine tasting, but it’s designed to be enjoyable for oenophiles (that just sounds pretentious) and people who know less about wine than they know about quantum mechanics (like yours truly)  The event is Saturday from either 1-5 or 7-11, at DAR Constitution Hall and tickets are $50.  Who knows, maybe I’ll learn something, or at least, get tipsy trying?

Ruffled Maxi (VS, $70)

I bought this dress on a lark, because I am easily the least boho person I know.  But sometimes, it’s good to step out side your box.  Plus, I love the paisley pattern.  No, I can’t believe I just typed that either.

I’ll be wearing this to Wine RIOT! for two reasons, 1) I’m unsure whether it will be warm or cold in the Hall and 2) once I belt it and throw a flame-colored cardigan over it, it’s so comfortable that it’s perfect for looking casual but pulled together.

Enjoy your weekend, see your Monday!

Happy Hour

Oh, so jealous! I can't drink right now and I miss my nightly glass of wine with dinner so much. I grew up in a household where a carafe of inexpensive table wine on the dinner table was standard every night, so I guess I think of it as the drink of the common man, not that of snooty mouth-swishers. Have fun!!

Have a great weekend! I, too, can't drink wine right now so enjoy yours for me. Also, pooh to the snobs, they give wine a bad name if you ask me. Some of the best wine out there is ~$10, and anyway, the point is to enjoy it– who cares about all the rest??! (But bourbon, yumm.)

There are quite a few oenophiles in my family – but they aren't snobby, they just live in California and have access to a lot of inexpensive, but good wine. Not that they don't splurge at times – I tend to stick at the lower end of the spectrum and with a few types that I know that I like, such as a decent Merlot or Riesling. I have thought about taking a wine education class though – just so I don't look like a complete dummy in social situations if those two things aren't available.

I'm going to that too! And it's too late for this year, but you can “volunteer” (set up in the morning or work the first afternoon shift) and get to attend for free! I couldn't pass that up 🙂

I bought this dress last year. Its a smidge short (I'm 5″6″) and its definitely not my typical style but I get compliments every time I wear it. Feeling a little twinge of pride right now that it is Belle approved :-)…

  6. Jenny says:

i'll be here, at this location, wearing this…said the anonymous blog author?

  7. Belle says:

Jenny: I'm pseudononymous, so my name never appears on the site. And if anyone bought a ticket just to try to find me, then I guess I'm happy to have contributed to Second Glass's profits.

  8. CMS says:

I cant lie when I saw this post, I wished Id seen it sooner so I couldve attended, possibly seen you and put a face to one of my favorite bloggers 🙂

  9. N says:

Catching up on late posts, and I just have to say this Daughter thanks you for using DAR Constitution Hall's full name! 🙂

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
