Happy Friday the 13th

Apr 13, 2012

If you’re reading this, I’m somewhere in the middle of the country hobnobbing with real, live, non-D.C. people on a business trip.  I’m probably shoulder deep in a plate of BBQ, wondering how to get sauce out of my Nanette Lepore suit.  But since today will be three days into a five day conference, I’m probably too sleep deprived to care that vinegar-based stains are some of the hardest to remove.

There will be no posts today.  I hate to do this two Fridays in a row, but sometimes circumstances conspire against us.  Despite the fact that I don’t return from this excursion until very late on Sunday night, there will be posts Monday.  How do I know? I already wrote them.

But since I don’t want to leave you hanging completely on this day of superstition and perceived woe, how about a mini-Discuss post?

I love when I buy something inexpensive and it becomes a wardrobe staple.  It makes me feel like such a savvy shopper.  Last month, I bought this scalloped, Indian-influenced necklace from Asos, and I have been wearing it with everything.  It really dresses up a crewneck sweater or silk blouse.

Orelia Matt Filigree Gold Necklace (Asos, $45)

Want to see another one of my new favorite accessories, which also cost under-$75?

Rachel Rachel Roy Guava Clutch ($59)

Two things that I love about this clutch: The fun pop of color and the fact that it’s small enough to fit in my other purse.  So, I fill it with my essentials after work, stow my regular handbag in my locked desk and mingle unencumbered by my giant purse.

Have you found any great inexpensive pieces that you’d like to share with your fellow CHS readers?  After all, what good is a fantastic buy if you don’t tell everyone about it?

I'm judging myself for writing this, but I really like the jewelry I find at Forever 21 in Metro Center. I have a couple of items from there that I wear out every weekend that cost about $5 that I've had for about a year. I'm shocked that they're holding it together considering the price and where I bought them.

  2. There's a jewelry store in Mississippi and Tennessee (formerly Alabama, too) called Turkoyz, and every time I visit a friend in the area, I stock up there. The pieces are very affordable, but they look very expensive. And they always have sales. I wish they were closer!

A number of years ago when Madonna created a line for H&M I bought a cream colored lined blazer for about $40. I bought it because I was hoping the classic cut and style and decent material would last for more than 1 season. It has been at least 5 years and I wear this blazer through the spring and summer months. It can be dressed up or down and has survived multiple dry cleanings. I always get compliments on it and every time I wear it I feel great!

    RiverCityFashion,

OMG, I don't know what the odds are, but I know Turqoyz and it is the GREATEST! Everything is under about $25. Every single time I wear something from Turqoyz I get compliments. I got a pair of “knot” earrings there last fall that truly look like they were hundreds dollars instead of $17.50. I'll be moving away from this area soon and plan to do a huge stocking-up trip before I go.

    Belle,

My favorite bargain is a brown velvet blazer from a local department store I got for $8 on super clearance. It presents such a sharp appearance and I feel happy wearing such a great bargain. I'm also happy any time I walk into Ann Taylor on a 40% off everything day right as they reset the entire store and mark down everything and move it to clearance to put out an all new set. If you can get there that lucky day, there's tons of merchandise for what amounts to about 70% off.

  5. Francine says:

The bodyshaper camis at New York and Company are awesome. I wear them all the time. They don't at all feel like a girdle, the way some bodyshapers do; they just gently smooth things out. They are cheap and come in a ton of colors (not nearly as many on the website as I've found in the store, strangely enough) and so freaking comfortable. I have about 10 of them and I wear them under a lighter cotton shirt when I am hiking or working out, and camis under suit jackets and blouses, as pajama tops. Seriously, grab some of these — they are the best.

Also, that Old Navy chambray blouse, plus a nautical blue-and-white striped shirt that I got there too. I wear it all the time. Cheap and durable.

  6. Jen says:

Thanks for the information on Turkoyz ladies. I'm in Memphis and will have to check it out soon!

  7. MKal says:

I bought a bib necklace at Target years ago and wear it constantly – it can dress up jeans and a shirt quite easily.

  8. Lane says:

My best deal I've found is shape wear they sell at Target, it's made by the same girl who founded Spanx but at about half the price… Other than that, best recent deal my roommate bought were coral jeggins at Old Navy (I hadn't been in that store in years – I'd relegated it to the land of the tacky American Flag tee shirts of my youth, but there are a ton of cute and inexpensive pieces there now).

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
