Two Ways: Grey Leopard Pumps

Feb 28, 2012

Shoe: Nine West Austin Pumps (Zappos, $56)

From the Left, Earrings: Kate Spade Square Earrings ($78) Bracelet: Modern Myth Bracelet ($53) Bag: Marc Jacobs Petal Bag ($438) Scarf: Versace Baroque Modal Scarf ($295) Sweater: J.Crew Tippi Sweater ($73) Skirt: Telegraph Super 120s Skirt ($128)

From the Right, Earrings: Grey Gardens Gunmetal Studs ($295) Bag: Franchi Edith Bag ($188) Tee: StyleBop Tee ($85) Jacket: Jades 24 Biker Jacket (249 Pounds) Jeans: Joe Jeans Skinny Jeans ($158)

For the Office. Yellow with grey is one of my favorite color combinations. For this outfit, I built a palette of gray tones with different shades of yellow; one bright with green undertones, one in a more muted, classic yellow.  The shoes are nice because you can build virtually whatever you want on top and they’ll match.  Leopard goes with nothing, so it kind of goes with everything.

This is a slightly longer skirt than I usually use, as it falls just a bit below the knee.  It’s a skirt that I can’t wear because I’m long torsoed vs. long legged.  However, if you are over 5’3″, and proportionally, most of your height is in your legs, give these skirts a try.  The longer skirt has an interesting, vintage feel, which could be a nice change.  You will want to wear heels, however, as this skirt needs a little lift.

I would probably wrap the scarf around my neck and let the ends hang freely, but if you want to employ another method, please do.

As for the rest of the accessories, looking at the set again, I might have chosen a bag with more structure, like this Kate Spade Jannine laptop bag. (I keep adding the bag to my shopping cart, and then changing my mind. At 50% off, it’s getting harder and harder to resist the red bag’s siren song.)

I like the earrings because they have both yellow and grey tones.  And the bracelet is just a simple, little bauble to pull the look together.  I’m also really loving the Greek Key design this season.

For the hair, I would wear it up in a looser, whispy style.  For the makeup, I’d stay neutral with taupes and greys, the cheeks would be a pale pink and the lips a light rose.  I would also avoid any clashing polish on the nails: no coral, no bright pink, no blue, etc.

For a Late Dinner.  I’m trying to decide if I want to buy colored jeans.  They’ll be on trend until at least next summer, so I could get enough wear out of them to make it worth it.  The question is what color to buy.  I probably wouldn’t do red or pink and coral wouldn’t match anything in my closet.  So I’m debating between green and these purple Joe’s.

This outfit combines a cool motorcycle jacket in shapes of blue, purple and grey with the ash violet jeans.  I added a simple white, v-neck tee because it didn’t need anything else and I like how the crisp brightness of the white breaks up the muted palette.  And I think the leopard shoes just add a bit more trendy, cool to the outfit.

For the accessories, I chose a studded box clutch and resin flower earrings.  I would also have done a simple, shorter pendant necklace to compliment the neckline of the shirt, but I couldn’t find one.  Also, the earrings were my second choice, as I wanted gunmetal hoops, but this gives it a little bit of femininity.

For the hair, I would say down and sleek, probably flat ironed.  For the makeup, I would say a berry lip with charcoal eyeliner and mauve shadow.

Next summer, as in summer 2013? How do you know that?

  2. TA says:

I have never thought to pair yellow with grey. Very sleek and spring-like! I like it very much.

  3. Nina says:

I like the set, but I feel like these two ways are getting pricier and pricier. A Versace scarf? I know Polyvore is famous for their high price point, but my favorite posts on CHS are things I could actually buy. Sorry to snark, but DC is expensive and non-profit pay is low. $295 scarves and $85 tshirts are just not in my budget.

  4. Jen says:

I have been trying to decide whether to do the color jeans or not too! I was thinking something in a more muted tone and I really like that purple but can't find anything within my budget! (especially for something I will get very limited wear out of!) I was looking for a cheap version at Forever 21 (but didn't like any other their color options) to put with a nicer silk nude top but I already have a grey cotton blazer so thanks for the idea to put it with something I already have in my closet. Now I just need to find a some cheap jeans!

  5. Belle says:

Nina: Obviously, I don't expect you to buy each piece in the set. I'm not buying $300 scarves either. But sometimes, I go cruising for an item and the expensive one might be the only one that I can find. I hate when it happens, but it does happen.

  6. Belle says:

b23: Call it an educated guess. Last summer colored jeans were avant garde, this summer they're on trend, next summer they will be everywhere and then, in 2014, they'll be passe. These things usually last three years. Call it the Equipment silk shirt matrix.

  7. e-liz says:

gap has tons of fun colors for $69

  8. b23 says:

Very interesting . . . I knew you had a reason, I just wanted to learn something from you. And I did. 🙂 I did think that maxi dresses would be more short lived, however, and they're still going strong.

Also, Target has some great colored skinny jeans for only $23, and I just checked: they have all sorts of new colors for spring. I have two pairs that I bought this winter, and I love them. Watch out, I might buy every pair. I love that you can buy four different colors for the price of even a cheaper pair from another size!!!! Be warned, though, they run really small. I am a size 6 and had to buy a size 13. I also fit in the 11 but decided to go up in case they shrunk during washing, which they didn't really (but I don't dry them).

  9. R says:

I just ordered a pair of cement colored jeans from Garnet Hill, since they were highly reviewed and the price wasn't too bad. They didn't come yet, but this neutral is my meek way of entering the jean colored world. I might even wear a white pair, although I absolutely despise see-thru pants so we'll see.

  10. Jenny says:

looks fun. love all the colored denim i'm seeing for spring. but compliment ≠ complement. oops.

  11. Roberta says:

Damn you, Belle. (I mean that in the nicest possible way, of course.) I was all set to bypass this colored jean trend, and then you had to find these Joe's Jeans in that gorgeous shade, and then I had to go to the Joe's website and see that they have FIFTY FIVE colors and I want at least ten of them. I also lust after that motorcycle jacket. LUST. My credit card is cringing.

  12. Roberta says:

Sorry to double-comment, but I also love the yellow with gray combo. I never thought of that, and I have a gray suit in the same shade as pictured. Thanks for the idea to liven it up for spring.

  13. Catherine says:

    @Jenny – it's wrong on here consistently ;(

  14. Belle says:

Jenny: I'll work on that one. I'm finally getting a better presence of mind about their, there and they're. Of course, I know the difference, I just tend to read over it when I edit. So, I guess compliment and complement is next.

But at least I'm consistent, right?

  15. Ann says:

    Belle –
You said you're long torso'ed (sp?) and short-legged — me too! What pants do you recommend are flattering besides a skinny fit? I'm in a total rut and sick of wearing 3 inch heels to make up for my proportions.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
