Discuss: "Louder than a Bomb"

Feb 3, 2012

It’s been a long, hard week here at Chez Belle.  Congress is getting back into the swing of things, the election is taking off and, of course, I chose this week to get sick, missing the coolest event of the year: Simon Doonan at the W.  [headdesk]  But it wasn’t all bad…

While I was laying on my couch recuperating, I watched a documentary that I had TiVoed from OWN called “Louder than a Bomb.”  The documentary followed four groups of Chicago high school students as they prepared for and competed in the largest poetry slam contest in America.

Now, some of you are probably thinking, “Poetry slam = Granola Hippies in a Coffee Shop with Bongos.” But just watch these two videos, and you’ll see some of the awesomeness that grabbed my attention and admiration.

Nate Marshall, Lebron James

Adam Gottlieb, Breathe Now

These poems are good, but the ones featured in the documentary are even better.  And the stories told about the lives these kids lead and the issues that they’ve overcome–neglect, abuse, crime, etc.–through poetry are incredible. So if you want something inspirational to lift your spirits and make you feel better about America’s youth, pick up a copy of “Louder than a Bomb” on Netflix.  (Sadly, it’s not out for sale until March 20, 2012.)

    Awesome is an understatement! WoW!

I believe it's more commonly known as “spoken word”, and while I think what these young talented poets are great, no one beats Saul Williams. I was thankful I was able to watch him perform a few times nearly a decade ago here in West LA.

I volunteered with the organization that puts LTAB on all last year. They are beyond amazing.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
