Consigment Shops Embrace the Interwebs

Jan 11, 2012

I do the majority of my shopping online.  This is partly because I work long hours, but mostly because I can always find my size online, I can always find the best price on my item and using eBates, I can earn cash back.  So why would I ever go to the mall?

Perhaps this is why I don’t spend as much time cruising local thrift, consignment and vintage stores.  I know that there are great deals to be had, but it just seems like such a hassle.  Enter Current Boutique, a local consigment boutuique who posts some of their recent acquisitions online

These Christian Louboutin wedges are calling my name!  Maybe I’ll take a trip to their Logan Circle location and do some shopping at an actual brick and mortar store? (Quelle horreur.)

Frankly, I think it’s a great idea for consignment shops to post photos of their wares online.  It lures people into the shop and helps you get a feel for what else you might find when you visit.  So is Current the only local shop that’s gotten into the act or do you ladies know of more forward-looking shops?

I live in Old Town, and every time I go to Current Boutique, I buy something. Every. Single. Time. I also have sold clothes back! I think with the economy as bad as it is, consignment stores are the way to go. I got a brand new Banana Republic skirt at Current for $17… originally $88. Try it!

I stop in at the Clarendon location every time I walk by. I got a J Crew suit for $100 there. There are always new things there.

    Wish they posted prices!

I love Current. I've consigned hundreds of dollars worth of clothes at the Clarendon location. I like that their owners are picky about what they take, too. It makes their selections higher quality.

Ella-Rue in Gtown posts pictures of new items on the store's Facebook page. Updated almost daily

There's a formal consignment store called ReDress Boutique that does this. They're not in DC, but they do ship nationwide. Good for cocktail dresses, etc– their website is http://www.redressboutique.com.

I absolutely LOVE current. Great clothes, great customer service/staff, great place to shop!!

Current is fantastic! Got a perfect leather Coach bag there for $85, as well as several Banana Republic and Ann Taylor skirts for about $20 each.

My favorite consignment shop! Since I live in Old Town, I peruse the King Street shop every weekend, where I've found some great basics and lots of low-guilt / high-enjoyment clutches and heels. And there's nothing better than trading in a few pieces that haven't worked out, then taking home a fantastic new one for free!

My favorite vintage shop is {Designer Archives}! They currently only sell online — DesignerArchivesLLC.com — but are based out of Chevy Chase. They sell anything from vintage 1950's top handle handbags, to hipster trendy vintage, to high-end designer vintage. I recently purchased a vintage 1988 Chanel skirt from them that was in pristine condition! The best part is that they post pictures of their new items on their Facebook page — Facebook.com/DArchives — and on their Twitter: @DArchives. Considering their high-end vintage sells almost immediately, their Twitter is really helpful.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
