Hunger Games Nail Polish

Jan 10, 2012

Like most politicos, I read books for work more often than I read books for pleasure.  So I have a simple rule, I read one non-fiction book and then one fiction book.  It takes the edge off of the heavy work reading (biographies, long non-fiction books about wars, elections, etc.), but balances the frivolity that I find in a lot of fiction books (seriously, Plum Sykes? I could write a better book in my sleep.).

Virginia suggested the Hunger Games trilogy some time ago, but in the torrent of Twilight nonsense that America has been forced to suffer through over the past few years, anything in the young adult category was not high on my list of priorities.  Then, I saw the trailer for the movie version being released in March and thought, “No sparkly vampires, maybe this book won’t suck?”  (The pun was accidental, but I’m keeping it.)

After spending an entire weekend locked in my apartment reading the books, the verdict is that the books are good.  Not East of Eden good, or Joan Didion good, but solid, entertaining reads.  Entertaining enough that I’m really looking forward to the movie and the Hunger Games-inspired nail polishes being released by China Glaze.  That’s right, nail polishes.

I usually don’t go for movie-inspired makeup collections because they’re so forced.  (Ooh, a red lipstick inspired by a movie about vampires, original.)  But the colors in this collection are divine.

Of the twelve shades, there are only two that I would be hesitant to wear.  On my list of must haves would be Harvest Moon, Stone Cold and Agro, which seems to be the perfect shade of peridot.  I’d also consider Riveting, since Pantone named Tangerine the color of 2012. So while I prefer the original, character-driven names (which didn’t survive the litigation), I will be happy to drop $4 per bottle to own a few of them.

The line will be released in early March just in time for the movie.  Which shades would you like to see on your fingertips?

Oh, I must agree, movie inspired make-up seems very juvenile, but these are indeed lovely! My must-haves are Stone Cold, Harvest, and the Fois Gras, but I wouldn't mind putting on Electrify for a Friday night out with the girls! What a fun find, thanks Belle!

  2. Virginia says:

Woohoo, so glad you got on the Hunger Games bandwagon – we will have to plan a movie date. My favorites are definitely Fast Track, Stone Cold…and I would probably even wear Smoke and Ashes when in a dark mood. Great find!!

i too am pretty excited for this.

I adore Fast Track, Electrify, Riveting, and Harvest Moon. I love the color in Agro, but I think I wouldn't wear it. I still don't know if I could force myself to read the books… 🙂

  5. Belle says:

KLo: That's how I felt too. But give the first one a chance, if you hate it, you'll be out the cost of a paperback.

  6. Anna Lou says:

Oh my goodness…I did the same sort of thing. I resisted while all of my friends were telling me about them (pop fiction in general is NOT my thing), but after seeing the trailer I read all three in a weekend. I actually just finished re-reading them, because March 26 just seems too far away 🙂

  7. Rory says:

I already own a bunch of colors that are similar to a lot of this collection, but the one that caught my eye is Luxe and Lush. If it actually comes out in that finish it would be amazing. I just hope it's opaque.

  8. I love Luxe and Lush, Dress Me Up, and Hook and Line. I'm reading a book for my book club right now but am excited to pick up the second book again (I know some people wonder how I ever put it down).

KLo–I couldn't get through the Twilight series but I really enjoyed The Hunger Games. Get it from the library and if you hate it you won't be out anything.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
