10th Commandment: January 9

Jan 9, 2012

Dressing professionally but casually while Congress is out of sesson is a challenge for some people.  I see spandex pants.  I see torn jeans.  I see leggings with tops that don’t cover the tush.

One look that won’t steer you wrong? A sweater dress, tights and flat boots.  Add a scarf and a long necklace, and you have a look that is comfortable as can be and looks professional.

    Tried to post this earlier…

This is my own assumption, but I have always thought of scarves and long necklaces as mutually exclusive accessories. Would you consider a future post showing them worn together.

Also – love your friend's blog A Papered Life.

I know we beat this topic to death in the fall, so please don't think I'm trying to be smart alleck, but can you clarify what color tights/boots would go with these? Black tights and boots with the first two? Navy tights and cognac boots with the last one?

I'm asking because I have been on the search for a sweater dress since you started singing their praises years ago, but I haven't been able to find 'the one' due to my accessory fears (sad, I know).

    I second Rachel's comment.

Rachel- You are correct. It should have said “OR a long necklace.”

LS-Black tights on the first two, navy on the last set. Black boots on the first two (or cognac on the second could be okay). Cognac or grey on the last one.

I love the idea of a sweater dress but always seem to come across ones that are a bit…clingy. I mean, would a slip solve this or am I just thinking like an old lady??

I too, find it really hard to figure out tights and boots/shoes for a sweater dress. I am not a tights girl…for the Ann Taylor Rugby dress…could I wear that to a bridal shower January 28th with no tights and the ankle boots like in the picture and bear the cold or is that ridiculous? How about brown boots and no tights? Help! I am buying the dress today!
