New Year's Eve 2011: Cropped Wool Pants

Dec 22, 2011

Pants: J.Crew Cafe Capri ($118)

From Left, Earrings: CZ Princess Studs ($38), Ring: Ruby Eternity Ring ($130), Blouse: Oscar de la Renta Lace Blouse ($435), Bag: Lulu Townsend Clutch ($25), Shoes: Giuseppe Zanotti Red Pumps: ($278)

From Right, Earrings: Champagne Drops ($45), Bracelet: Champagne Stone Bracelet ($65), Blouse: Mulberry Metallic Crepe Top ($600), Bag: Leopard Envelope Clutch ($198), Shoes: Valentino Platform Sandals ($435)

Vintage Vixen.  When I think of capri pants, I think of the 1950s.  Mixing this high neck lace blouse with simple black ankle-length trousers really captures a vintage essence.  To spice things up a bit for the holiday, I added siren red stilettos and coordinating accessories.

This red clutch is the perfect statement piece, and at just $25, it’s budget friendly.  Add in some faux-but-still-fabulous jewels and the look is almost complete.  I say almost because unlike many of this week’s outfits, hair and makeup is an integral part of completing this look.

For the hair, I recommend a high bun or a French twist to keep up with the pulled together vibe.  As for makeup, we have red accessories so, of course, we want a red lip.  I’d also use this as an opportunity for thick, winged eyeliner ala Bridget Bardot.

Glamorous Girl. The color palette for this outfit is much more subtle than its counterpart.  I love the soft champagne color of the top and the coordinating jewels.  This is a more refined metallic for those of you who find sequins a bit gauche.

The peplum blouse is absolutely fantastic (though decidedly out of my price range).  It captures a bit of Old Hollywood glam, but stays modern with some help from a leopard clutch and some daring ankle-strap high heels.  And the jewelry captures the essence of the blouse and ties the whole look together.

As for hair and makeup, I would wear a shimmery, rose-colored blush with a berry lip color that leans into red territory.  Personally, I’d try Clinique Colour Surge in Cranberry Cream.  I’d also play it heavy with the eyeliner but light with the eyeshadow for an eye that’s hazy but not smoky.  Lastly, I’d wear the hair in a wavy updo at the nape of the neck.

I love the “Glamorous Girl” outfit, I live in a slightly warmer climate but not enough to not need some kind of jacket — I have a cropped tuxedo jacket that I've been looking for more things to pair with, if I were to swap in just a skinny black pant for the cropped (too short for cropped to not look anything but comical) would that be acceptable NYE attire or would I look too much like I was wearing a weird suit?

  2. Lauren says:

I love both of these looks, but I must say that I would like to see one of these done with some more affordable pieces. I don't know about you, but $435 (let alone $600) for a blouse is just not in my price range!

  3. Belle says:

Lauren-I know, I went way overboard. I so rarely give in and post items at crazy prices, but this time, I thought I'd do it just once.

  4. Belle says:

Beth-If I were going to do a “suit” for NYE, I'd go one of two ways. I'd go total costume with a tuxedo shirt and a bib necklace and a french twist and a red lip. Or I'd find a really sparkly shirt to go underneath and a bright heel.

That Mulberry top is amazing. When I win the lottery…

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
