Discuss: I Hereby Resolve

Dec 22, 2011

I’ve mentioned before that I don’t usually make New Year’s Resolutions.  If I decide that I’d like to change something about my life or my behavior, I usually just do it because my willpower is such that if I don’t strike while I’m motivated, it will never happen.  But this year, I decided to make a resolution for myself.

It’s becoming painfully obvious that I don’t sleep enough.  Between work, this blog and my life, I am just not getting the sleep I need to thrive.  I might get six hours per night, and I really do best on 8.5.  So I’m not even getting close to what I need.

To reach my goal, I’m going to have to sacrifice a full weekend day to blogging.  No television.  No errands.  No brunches.  Just blogging.

Am I looking forward to it?  Not really.  But if it frees up my evenings and gets me to bed before 1:00AM, I’m happy.  Or at least, I hope I’ll be happy…and rested.

So do you make New Year’s Resolutions?  If so, what are you resolving this year?  And if you’ve had any resolutions that worked out really well for you in the past, I’d like to hear about those too.

wow…I feel selfish for saying this, but on behalf of all other fans of your blog, thank you! 🙂

And as for past resolutions that were successful, my 2011 resolution was actually the fitness goal that's been discussed here in the last two days. I'm going to “renew” it for 2012, along with several other practical and funny goals!

If you arent looking forward to it and you really need the weekend to unwind, maybe some relaxation comes before the blog? Or maybe just a half day of blogging? My weekends are sacred, sometimes I stay in pj's the whole weekend and sometimes I get lots of stuff done that I dont get done during the week. It seems like you lead a pretty busy life, like many of us, and the best thing about this blog (aside from the fashion) is being able to relate to you. I would assume that more readers would be happy to see less postings from a better rested belle that are punchy and funny than a few extra that hurt your quality of life. And now for a quote thats stuck with me (as corny as it is), “not a sermon, just a thought.”

    Hi Belle,

I hope next year is your best one yet. I just wanted to say thank you to you for writing this blog, and let you know that while I have been a reader of most of the big fashion blogs on the web at one point or another, the only one I actually consistently go to is yours. That's because yours is both great at fashion advice and pictures, but also because you seem like a relatable, interesting, and genuine person. I wish you many good nights of sleep in 2012. Cheers!

Belle, I enjoy and look forward to your posts, but I'm concerned that you've been giving up sleep for your blog/readers and will now be giving up a precious weekend day. I don't think I'm worth that, frankly. : ) Take care of yourself!

  5. I limit TV to 3 hours a week, which is way less than I used to watch, in order to spend more time writing in the evenings and weekends while my daughter naps. It was hard at first, but now I don't even miss it. The shows I watch are my favorites; everything else was just filler anyway.

  6. Anon says:

Yes, thank you for writing this blog, it's my favorite fashion blog as well. Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year! Hope you are able to get more rest in 2012. I always do resolutions but I pick fun ones, like “go to more museums” or “listen to more music.” I sometimes focus too much on work and doing the same things over and over with friends. The resolutions help remind me that it's important to be a well rounded person with outside interests.

  7. Beth says:

Good luck with your resolution and with getting some much needed rest! My resolution this year is to get out of my cubicle and meet more people in my office (big office and just started last month)

You are incredibly talented at fashion and putting together outfits. I love reading your posts and never comment, but wanted to let you know how amazing your blog is.

  9. Laura B says:

    Hi Belle,

While your blog is amazing, I feel that you are giving up too much that for something that started out for fun. If you aren't having enough time for the things you want to do let alone the things you must do (sleep), do you wonder if you're doing too much for this? I mean a lot of the other blogs I see are like once-a-day posts. Couldn't that be enough for this? You have your own life and should be doing this blog because you like it, not because you owe anyone anything on this. What is so unbelievably important in doing multiple posts a day? I feel like you are giving up too much for this now. You even said you aren't happy about giving up an entire day. Shouldn't that be a sign that this is taking over your life? You have a career and other things to do besides this blog, you don't have much free time for the things you really want to do. Just words for thought. Its your life, you get it once, so live it how you want to.

    Laura

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
