Belle's Airplane Travel Essentials

Nov 21, 2011

Last week, Anh at 9 to 5 Chic shared the contents of her travel bag, and I thought that it was such a cute idea, that I decided to do the same.

The Bag: Rebecca Minkoff Linen Spark Satchel.  I picked this bag up at the Rebecca Minkoff online sample sale this spring, and I get so many compliments on it.  I like it for travel because it’s big enough to hold all my essentials, but not so big that I feel like I need a yak to help me carry it.

Travel Extras (working clockwise): Gold Rebecca Minkoff Zip Wallet holds all my essentials.  Gum, because it’s either that or giving into the airport Taco Bell kiosk.  Burt’s Bees chapstick.  Advil.  Purell (If it weren’t for the 3oz rule, that would be the gallon size.) Travel hairbrush.

I always pack a scarf for the plane.  This patterened oatmeal and slate blue scarf is my favorite.  Though, now that the weather is colder, I will probably break out my cashmere shawl.

Lastly, in the bottom row, we have my Ray-Bans.  These are my go-to sunglasses because they go with everything.  I also like to carry my receipts for my expenses and the like it’s this Rebecca Minkoff pouch.

Reading Material: I always like to pack a selection of magazines, these are some of my favorites.  I also usually have Guns & Ammo and Real Simple.  What can I say?  I’m a woman of diverse interests.

I’m also reading Moneyball, right now.  I highly recommend it.  In fact, I like it so much, it makes me want to learn more about baseball.  And that’s weird.

Technology: iPad 2, in my black Dodo Case.  I like this case because it looks like a Moleskine notebook and it’s lightweight.  FlipVideo camera and tripod for taking stills and home movies.

Jewelry: I like to carry my jewelry with me instead of in my suitcase.  Here, we have a selection of rings (my favorite), a chunky pyramid bracelet, a gold pendant and a backup pair of earrings.  Even though I wear my studs nearly every day, I like to carry a pair of drops when I travel in case I need to dress up for some unexpected reason.  I also like to recycle my Birchbox box as a jewelry carrier.

So what do you carry when you travel?

i am in love with that bag.

Great scarf! Looks so versatile. Have you considered a jewerly roll? I use one for travel and it keeps necklaces from getting tangled.

  3. Cecilia says:

George Will wrote a great book about baseball, if you decide to follow through and make a study of it. Boys of Summer, maybe? Can't recall the exact title.

Excited to see shared reading interests – I subscribe to both The Economist and Shape!

i knew i liked you belle, your blog is amazing, but now that i know you read “guns and ammo” im in love.

as for travel, i always carry dramamean (the original formula). even if you dont get nauseous on planes, it will knock you out if you're too wound up or anxious to sleep (the former is what happens when i travel for work; the latter when there's lots of turbulence). be aware, however, that it's a diuretic, so you'll like get dried out more than normal.

my husband never travels without an inflatable travel pillow. bringing an inflatable one is key because it flattens so it's easy to stick in a purse/backpack/outside pocket of a carryon, and because you can adjust the firmness / squishyness during flight.

  6. Alicia says:

Wow, wish that I could travel like that. My travel essentials are the dog in her carrier and then my rolling suitcase with all my travel contents stuffed inside. Reading material is the iPad plus a magazine of whatever came in the mail (for when you have to turn off the electronics).

  7. S says:

My bag has similar contents but includes my headphones (my everyday earbuds for short trips, noise canceling ones for longer flights) and an insulated water bottle that I take through security empty and fill at airport drinking fountains. Even with cold water, my insulated bottle doesn't sweat, so it won't get the contents of my bag wet.

  8. danielle says:

glad to see i'm not the only person who finds birchbox boxes great for storing jewelry.

  9. Laura says:

Love this bag! Belle, do you have any problem keeping it clean while you travel, given that it is linen?

  10. Virginia says:

If i ever get an Ipad (Santa, are you listening?) I am totally getting the Dodo case – I love that it looks like a moleskin notebook.

  11. ss says:

Nice to see the Economist in your bag and curious whether it is popular reading among US policy types ? Not American myself nor do I live there but I like the Economist's US coverage a lot – it feels an honest effort at representing a large and heterogeneous country. And it's great for reading on the go – dense with text, lightweight and can be rolled up to make it even more compact.

But … no phone ? No chargers ?

  12. CynthiaW says:

I love the idea of using an old Birchbox to carry jewelry – I usually carry mine in a ziplock bag. I also have my iPod with me and carry my various chargers in my carry-on as well. I suppose that I could put some music on the iPad and dispense with the iPod, but I like to have it with me in case I hit the hotel gym anyway.

  13. Lexi says:

I love the idea of using a Birchbox, and am totally stealing this idea for my flight to Iowa tomorrow!

I also always carry with me a pair of fluffy cozy socks. I usually wear flats when I fly, and my feet get so cold! If it is an overseas flight, I have a small throw blanket that I bring with me. Also, I buy a bottle of water once I get through security.

  14. Joyce says:

Hi there — love the scarf! Can you please let me know where you purchased it? Thanks!

  15. Belle says:

    It's J.Crew from Spring 2011.

  16. caro says:

What kind of tripod is that? Looks so much more convenient than the gorilla pod.
