Cold Weather Essentials Fall 2011

Oct 13, 2011

Polyvore Set Here.

As the rainy, chilly weather persists, I am reminded that winter is right around the corner (tear).  Thus, it is time to start thinking about dressing for cold weather.  Here are a few cold weather essentials all under-$100.

Colored Outerwear:  Stow your boring black winter coat and invest in something of color.  This coat from Zara is bright, fun and perfect for mild winters and chilly autumns.

Tube Scarfs (aka Snoods): In the past, I’ve mocked the snood.  I thought then, and still think, that wearing a scarf as a hood looks dumb.  But wearing these items just as a scarf, can look really chic.

Also, I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve tried to button my coat over a heavy, wool scarf only to discover that it won’t snap.  A snood eliminates some of that bulk.

Fleece-Lined Tights:  Love tights?  Hate the way those chilly winter breezes penetrate the thin layer of Lycra?  Try fleece-lined tights.  Warmer and more opaque than regular tights, they are perfect for women who do a lot of walking during the colder months.

Leather Gloves:  Leather gloves are much more stylish than cloth or knit gloves.  Also, if you buy them wool or fleece-lined, they’re quite a bit warmer.

Socks for Rain Boots:  Unless you live in a very cold climate (Hi Mom!), rain boots are usually your best bet for winter footwear.  They’re not too bulky and they keep the slushy, wet muck off your feet. Sadly, rain boots are not very warm.

Luckily, Hunter makes these cozy fleece socks that will fit their boots and most other styles as well.  These socks will keep your feet toasty warm on cold weather days.

The Zara coat is much more red in person – just a caution. I was disappointed when I saw it, expecting it to be orange-er.

fleece-lined tights? what a great idea!

    Belle,

Do you have a recommendation for those of us who do have to deal with very cold climates?

  5. Beth says:

I am looking to invest in a new pair of leather gloves for this winter. What is a color that you would recommend other than black or brown that can still be a versatile neutral but add a bit of color? I tend to wear more brown than black outside the work environment but in the office black suites are de rigueur, and I would like to invest in a single pair that will look nice with both my causal and professional attire.

    Beth-Grey.

    Belle,

My co-workers are looking at me weird because I'm giggling at your response. But I'll take it as an affirmation of what I've always suspected-your feet are either going to be fashionable or warm on those negative degree days, never both.

I've been lusting over a gorgeous $99 mustard yellow coat at Zara myself… pretty sure it's the same as the orange one in your post… just more yellow 😉
    ie. like!

Beth-I had a pair of dark purple gloves leather gloves (purchased at Filene's) that were pretty neutral last year. (Of course, purple is not a true neutral, but they went with everything.) Of course, I managed to somehow lose one glove, so I no longer have the pair, but I am on the hunt for a similar pair this year!

  10. Sarah says:

I second the use of dark purple as a neutral!

  11. Beth says:

Thanks for the suggestion of dark purple, I'm really liking that idea! Also, do you think a dark hunter green could work as well?

  12. Lori says:

I love the fleece lined tights! I have always wondered how people who live in colder climates do skirts/dresses/tights! Now I know the secret. I also love the colorful coats! I think I might need to go shopping now…

The Beauty Edit: Neck Creams

Nora Ephron was right: I feel bad about my neck. As I move through my forties, the creases have turned into chasms. The skin sags like a pair of sweatpants with aging elastic. It’s not great. But it’s just a natural part of getting older. Over the past year, it feels like I’ve tried every […]
