10th Commandment: October 5

Oct 5, 2011

Skinny, capri trousers are big for Fall.  They won’t look good on everyone–they don’t look good on me–but if you want to try them, try on several pairs.  If you’re not sure that they look good on you, they probably don’t.  It’s best not to force it.  Not all trends are for everyone.

Elected Official

Emilio Pucci Low-rise Skinny Wool Pants (Net-a-Porter, $990)

Hill Staffer

Alice + Olivia Skinny Pants (Shopbop, $242)

Unpaid Intern

Cafe Wool Capri Pants (J.CREW, $118)

*I tried to find a less expensive pair, but I couldn’t find a pair that wasn’t faux pas in some other way (zippered pockets, knee length, etc.).  But don’t worry, J.Crew will have a sale soon enough.

I'm shorter and I want to try on a pair of these, but I have a serious fear that I could look “stumpy.” I've avoided them on the assumption that they are only for the taller crowd. Have any of you shorter ladies worn these and if so could you recommend a particular brand or what shoe you wear with them?? (I have the same concern with midi length skirts too)

  2. liz says:

Beth – I am 5'1″ and I have the same concerns, especially because I'm a little wide in the hips. With a midi skirt, I'd want something fairly high-waisted and well-tailored, and I would wear it only with super extra high heels (maybe nude and pointy just to make you look as long as is possible when you're actually really short). I'd also probably hem it a little shorter than people normally do for a midi skirt so it hits a tiny bit higher on my leg.

With the capris, go with something fairly narrow but not skinny-jean skinny that hits just above your ankle. As with the midi skirt, extra high, pointy nude pumps go a long way in terms of making you look elegant rather than frumpy.

  3. D says:

Beth – I am 5'1″ as well, and just bought Gap's “slim crop pants” in petite length. They hit just above the ankle (better than a higher crop) and they are skinny but flare a tiny bit at the bottom. I wear them with heels only – I think with flats I do look a little stumpy.

  4. Beth says:

Thanks so much Liz and D! I think I'll head over to the mall nude heels in toe this weekend now that I know it can be done on a shorter frame

  5. Grace says:

'Wool capri pants' sounds a bit like an oxymoron. If it's cold enough to wear wool pants, won't my ankles be chilly too? As a girl who walks to work year-round, what is the best way to stylishly balance heavier fabric capris (wool, tweed, etc.) with proper footwear and ankle coverage?

  6. Bettina says:

OK, maybe I'm particularly thick and this is plain obvious for everyone to see, but what is the problem with zippered pockets? I have a pair of really nice trousers I like to wear to work that have them and I'm not totally sure what's wrong with them. But now I feel self-conscious about my trousers. Please enlighten me!

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

The Find: My Best Workout Shorts

For eight years, I have worn the same workout shorts. Every year, an influencer tries to sell me new shorts. I order them. I try them on. They pale in comparison to the shorts I already own. I return them.
