Three Ways: J.Crew Ruffle Collar Blouse

Oct 4, 2011

Before I start, let me just say, that if you show up to this blog tomorrow and there are no posts, I apologize.  My weekend and my eek got away from me, and I may not have time to finish all three posts for tomorrow.  Consider this fair warning.

Polyvore Set Here.

Movie theaters are either freezing or roasting, there is no in between.  That’s why this layered look is perfect for a movie date or catching a flick with friends.

If you need a versatile sweater to wear under jackets and blazers, the cashmere tee from J.Crew is your best friend.  Wear it over a collared blouse, like this one, and layer it up for chilly days.  I also added a coordinating chalcedony necklace to play nicely with the berry color of the tee.

I chose these jeans with a bootcut because I’m seeing fewer pairs of skinny jeans on the street these days.  Maybe we’re collectively realizing that that wasn’t the best look for everyone.

Toss on a pair of ankle boots and a trench and you’re all set.

While layering a cardigan under a blazer is a fashion do, sometimes, I like to spruce it up a bit.  Layering a silk blouse over another silk blouse is just the ticket.  Here, I paired a bright coral blouse with a blush ivory one.  I’d also recommend that you belt this with a skinny brown belt since the top is a little blousey.  Layer under a camel blazer and over a pair of navy trousers for a pulled-together but approachable work look.

Too jazz this up, I added navy patent pumps, a deconstructed bag with tassels and a pair of horn-shaped earrings.  Pull your hair into a curly, low bun to complete the ensemble.

Yes, this shawl collared cape is $2,000.  But sometimes, a girl just wants to look at something stylish and dream.  Feel free to sub-in your favorite shawl collared cardi and a belt.

Olive, wine and ivory together.  Somewhere, my Mother is smiling.  It’s a sophisticated and timeless combination.

The neckline of this cozy cape pair perfectly with the higher, stand collar on the blouse.  Add in a skinny jean, a wine-colored bag and a pair of cognac boots for the perfect Fall look. I also added a ring from Reiss with a wine-colored stone to keep the whole look in sync.

Wear this outfit to work, to a picnic, apple picking or leaf peeping.  Wait.  Did I just say leaf peeping?  Clearly, the apple cider and crisp Autumn air are eating my brain.

Was that reference to the hilariousness of the phrase “leaf peeping” a nod to The West Wing?! Please say yes.

  2. Belle says:

    You caught me.

  3. R says:

I will now spend the rest of my workday looking for a comparable shawl collar cape that I can afford.

  4. LC says:

I have a pair of cognac boots that are VERY similar to those and are a steal right now on DSW: https://www.dsw.com/shoe/ciao+bella+tabby+leather+riding+boot?prodId=dsw12prod3350031&productRef=SEARCH

  5. K says:

    There's a cowl-neck cape from H&M for much cheaper – would require a belt-swap: https://www.hm.com/us/product/93813?article=93813-A#article=93813-C

  6. r says:

Love these, all of them. Can you explain how to do a curly bun? Sounds cute!

  7. Artemisia says:

R, do post back when you find the cape for less than $500? I'm honestly tempted to see if my seamstress can recreate it.

Love this set. Belle, I don't know how it took me so long to find your blog, but it's the only fashion blog that consistently inspires me.

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
