Belles's Weekly Reading: Short & Sweet Edition

Oct 3, 2011

One of the questions that I get most frequently is whether I think TOMS slip-on sneakers are a good walk-to-work shoe or faux pas.  The truth is, I’m so glad to see women in shoes that aren’t flip-flops or Uggs, that I’d accept just about anything else.

I should also mention that I happen to own a pair.  They have GOP elephants on them.  I wear them campaigning.

So if you want to buy a pair to walk to work in or wear while running errands, I won’t stop you.  They’re not faux pas, but they’re not chic either.  At best, they’re neutral.

Pledge Allegiance. Speaking of TOMS, the blogger formerly known as Capitol Hill Barbie has a piece on her new blog, Baby Steps in Heels, about them.  She’s observed, that at least in NYC, Moms fall into two camps: women who wear TOMS and women who wear Sperry Topsiders.

She falls into the Sperry camp. Not surprising given the time she spent in the Mid-Atlantic region.

All That Glitters.  I love sparkly nail polishes, but it’s tough to remove them. I usually end up scrubbing so hard that my cuticles are raw for days.  Luckily, another blogger came up with something called “The Foil Method,” which removes nail polish with minimal effort and mess.

Repair Job  Last week, I dropped my makeup bag.  My favorite eyeshadow and my favorite blush broke into a million pieces.  But instead of spending $40 on replacements, I turned to Google.

Thanks to the Interwebs, this tutorial and a bottle of rubbing alcohol, my makeup is good as new.

Tie One On.  You know that scene in the romantic movie when the leading lady helps her gentleman tie his bow tie?  I love that scene.  There’s just something so intimate about a woman stepping in to help a man in formal dress with his bow tie.

That’s why I was so pleased when Park & Bond posted a tutorial on tying a bow tie.  I’ll certainly be filing that one away for future reference.

Sorry Belle but I have to disagree on the TOMS. I've seen too many tweens and teens wearing bedazzled one to find these super.

  2. mndaln says:

I wish they still sold the political TOMS! I want a pair so bad!!

  3. Belle says:

R-I never said they were super, I said they were better than Uggs.

  4. Kim says:

Belle, I'm with you. I wear my TOMS for commuting and for randoms runs to the drug store, the farmer's market, to grab coffee on a Saturday morning. I know they're not stylish, but, IMO, they are fine. They are comfortable and unoffensive. I get that not everyone loves them, but I don't get people who have a huge problem with others who wear them.

  5. new staffer says:

where did you find the political TOMS?! I'd kill for a pair!

  6. Belle says:

They sold them in '08. Maybe they'll trot them out again for '12.

  7. Katie says:

Ugg does have some great boots that aren't the traditional Uggs youre talking about. Like this pair: https://www.uggaustralia.com/womens-aniela-fashionable-military-boots/3407,default,pd.html?dwvar_3407_color=FLNT&start=87&cgid=women-boots&srule=price-ascending
Theyre stylish and warm, but a little pricey..

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
