10th Commandment: September 20

Sep 20, 2011

Before you see the item, let me just say, this piece is a bit more expensive than our usual Three Ways pieces.  I’m not setting a precedent, I still believe this column she contain an under $150 item.  However, this is a basic that you can wear a couple of times per week, 52 weeks per year, for a few years.

Plus, if you can catch these pants on sale (and they are regularly on the sale rack), you can pick them up for 40-percent-off or more.

Do you know if the quality at the Theory outlet is the same as in the regular store? For instance I know Banana Republic has cheaper quality in their outlet stores so it's not as attractive to buy there from an investment point of view. Thanks!

  2. Ellie says:

In general, “outlet” means old seasons– or sometimes defective (although marked as such) clothes. “Factory store” (which is BR's model) is made specifically for lower price points and often has corresponding lower quality.

  3. Crystal says:

I generally love the cut of Theory pants, and these are quite lovely, but I very much dislike that they aren't lined. For a quality brand, I'm consistently surprised that Theory predominantly sells unlined dress pants.

  4. K says:

What makes this pair of black pants better than a less expensive version?

  5. A says:

Never seen you do this before, but you posted this exact same “10th Commandment” on September 13th… if I wasn't such a religious CHS reader, I wouldn't have remembered, haha. You are really trying to push these pants!

  6. Jess says:

I own these and they have worn like iron! The fabric is the perfect weight for all seasons. I bought them on sale at Nordstrom probably two years ago and they have more than paid for themselves. And…because of the cut they still look great whether you are up five pounds (winter) or down five (pounds) summer. Definitely worth the price and even better at the sale price.

  7. S says:

Haha A. I had the exact same thought. I guess we are all CHS junkies!

  8. Dr. Jean Grey says:

I second the complaint on lining, Crystal. I bought a pair of grey theory pants. I like them but it really irks me they are not lined.

  9. Belle says:

A-The post last week was a strapless dress. The pants were accidentally posted as well, but they weren't the post.

  10. chris says:

Are flares really a cut for all seasons? The shape seems a little out of style. But maybe they're exaggerated in the photo?

  11. e-liz says:

@A I agree. There's comments on the thread from Sept 13 as well. I feel like I just read this..?

  12. Belle says:

e-liz- As I explained above, this post was posted by accident last Tuesday due to a technical error. However, since it's going to be the Three Ways post for today, I had no choice but to post it again.

  13. BB says:

The flares look more exaggerated in the picture. I think they would be super-flattering on a curvy/pear shaped girl, especially with pointed toe pumps to lengthen the leg. There's a reason bootcut pants have been around for awhile–they are what works for girls with butts and thighs. But we do envy you tall, thin women who can pull of the brightly-colored crops and other more current styles.

  14. nycbunny says:

i have these slacks in black, grey and navy. my first pair was beige and i will say, they lasted over 6 years and are finally starting to lose their shape. the material and construction of these pants are just incredible. it is worth the money for a basic.

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]
