Discuss: Labor Day Sales

Sep 2, 2011

A friend and I are going to brave the crowds at Potomac Mills this weekend.  I know, Labor Day in an outlet mall; we must be crazy.  But neither of us can pass up a good deal.

On my list of things to look for:

Closed toe nude shoes (I only own open toe.)
Black pumps
Work dresses
Suits (They almost never have suits, but it’s worth a look.)
Silk, short-sleeved blouses
Statement jewelry

You can never be too specific when headed to the outlets, because you’re kind of at the mercy of what’s on sale.  But it’s nice to have a list so that you don’t get distracted by that sequin cocktail dress or those striped pumps.  After all, it’s only a good deal if you actually wear it.

So are you ladies headed off to the sales this weekend? And if so, what are you looking for?

As a former resident of PWC, the kasper outlet can have some lovely suits if you're willing to dig. Also, you're better off parking over by the Walmart than trying to get a parking spot actually at the mall or by Ikea. The parking lot is just an accident waiting to happen. Good luck!

I have always found the parking to be easiest near the Sears appliance outlet at Potomac Mills, even though it's a bit of a hike to the Nordstrom Rack. I tend to go to Leesburg instead because the crowds are less crazy. I am looking for boots (it's just about time for them to start appearing) and suits. I am also hunting for true navy pumps, which are seemingly impossible to find in a mid-height heel and wide width.

the bloomie's outlet is the first in the country and it is amazing, trust!

and this is the problem with not living in a big city. i am looking forward to the patagonia sale in dillon. but what i really need is everything you listed!

  5. Ms. B says:

ALWAYS go to an outlet with a list of most sought after needed items! A bargain is only a bargain if you wear it. My closets used to be filled with things “bought on a deal” that didn't make it from the hanger to actually wearing because those “too good of deals to pass up.” didn't really fit my life. WHAT A WASTE! I'm much better now at filling the required list first. My wallet thanks me.

Amy b.s. – I live in the wilderness like you. 500 miles from the nearest outlet or quality mall. It is a challenge to stay professionally and recreationally attired with what is available locally (and shopping on line usually means a LOT of returned items). WHAT A HASSLE! I know it is a stretch, but sometimes, it is worth the airfare to Seattle or the drive to SLC to hit a quality outlet or department store sale. We used to plan vacation around Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and be there when the doors opened in Fashion Place SLC. What a great Girls Trip! Oh to live in “civilization”. However, if I did I would probablly stay broke …but, I would look great!

  7. KLo says:

I'm copying your list: suits, short sleeve silk blouses & statement jewelry. Add a bag.

  8. Virginia says:

Are you really going to Potomac Mills? Good luck. I'd head to Leesburg, Hagerstown, or even Queenstown if I were you.

  9. K says:

I'll be headed to some mall, but not sure which. Hubby needs new work clothes and I could use some new blouses.

  10. Fan says:

    my list:
black skinny jeans (maybe nordstrom bp)
    tortoise shell bracelets
    black booties w/heel
    black tall boots w/heel

  11. w says:

shoes…Shoes…SHOES! I burn through mine at the end of each season. Gotta hate those cobblestones…

  12. Meg says:

If you don't find nude pumps on your outlet excursion the Joan & David Flipp Pump in nude is on sale in stores and online, and its really cute and comfortable. We hit the outlet mall last weekend, almost all the same sales, half the crowd!

  13. Erin says:

I tried to post this the other day but had trouble posting. Ann Taylor has a ton of silk blouses right now, many on sale. Happy shopping!

  14. Erin says:

@ Jess – I live in a big city, and I pretty much only shop online because it is such a pain in the neck to haul out to some suburban mall or to the downtown stores on public transportation only to find they don't have your size. So the grass isn't really greener :).

  15. Erin says:

@ Leslie – Look for Sofft pumps. I have some in a nice navy.

    (Sorry for the serial posts.)

  16. Leslie says:

@Erin – Thanks! I have a couple of pairs of shoes from Sofft, I'll look at what's available. I found a great pair of black patent/suede mid-heel oxfords and grey suede ankle boots so far this weekend.

  17. Valerie says:

    Belle, any good finds?

  18. JS says:

I was hunting a great pair of nude wedges, cute flats to commute in, a new work dress, and a few silk blouses. I wound up with gray wedges (couldn't find any nude), snake print flats, one new work dress, two new blouses, a pewter belt, and a black blazer (can you ever have too many?).

All in all, I'm satisfied. I only compromised on the wedges, but they're neutral enough.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
