Trends: Slouchy Trousers are Back

May 12, 2011

As I’ve said before, I don’t really wear pants.  If you see me wearing trousers, one of three things must be true: 1) It’s raining, 2) I overslept and didn’t shave my legs today, or 3) I’m out West where pants are the only acceptable attire for any occasion outside of a wedding.  So when I see an outfit that makes me thing my pro-skirt policy, it’s a big deal.

A slouchy, 70s-inspired, tie-front pant in a rusty shade of orange?  These pants are a revelation.

Basically, I avoid pants for a couple of reasons.  First, they’re not as feminine as skirts.  Second, I find them to be a bit constricting when I sit all day.  Three, I hate the wrinkles that develop on the inner thigh when I sit all day.  And lastly, they’re just not as special as a dress.

These pants are special.  They’re feminine.  And they look they’d be really comfortable.  Like pajama pant comfortable, it pajama pants looked chic and fashion forward.  Which, in case you were confused, they don’t.  Stop wearing them in public.

But I digress…

Luckily, I found a similar pant, in a similar color, in a price-point that I can afford.  It’s like the ghost of Farrah Fawcett smiled upon me.  (Oh, come on, those are totally Charlie’s Angels pants.)

Asos Tailored Palazzo Pant (Also in black, $72)

Sometimes, it’s just nice to see a trendy item that you really like.  It reminds you that you’re alive.  And these pants are trendy, fun, and, hopefully, flattering on my figure.  I guess we’ll find out in 5-7 business days when they arrive.

LOVE. not just 70s, but also very Hepburn. Kate, that is. Which wouldn't really add to your femininity argument, I suppose (though I happen to think she's one of the most amazing women out there, style-wise). So glad you tracked down that ASOS version. Might copy. Now.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
