2011 Oscars: One Thing Wrong

Feb 28, 2011

If I could only say one thing about last night’s red carpet, it would be this: Criminal levels of boredom.  At one point, I was so bored, I started shopping for skincare products on Amazon.  There were dresses I liked and dresses that I hated but, basically, the carpet was a snoozefest.

The only recurring theme on the carpet (besides the snoring) was that so many ensemble’s were on the verge of greatness only to have their hopes dashed by one single thing that was wrong.  Don’t believe me?  Check out the looks below.

Hailee Steinfeld in Marchesa.

A lovely dress for a fifteen-year-old, but what the hell was with the headband?

Natalie Portman in Rodarte.

I can’t even imagine how difficult it is to dress a pregnant body, but there is never a good reason to choose an (allegedly) full-length gown that shows your feet.

Melissa Leo in Marc Bouwer

Technically, this dress has two things wrong.  Eliminate the collar and sew up the slit.  Now, isn’t that better?

Amy Adams in L’Wren Scott

That necklace looks like something you’d pick up at the local Claire’s.  It also ruins the neckline of the dress.  Ladies, if you have a high-neck, sequin dress, you don’t need a necklace.  Period.

Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier

Dress is lovely, earrings are a disaster.  With a dress this ethereal, a heavy, domed earring isn’t advised.

  1. Govvie says:

Great analysis – I agree all around. Melissa Leo will be on a lot of “worst dressed” lists, but really it's due to the collar, and maybe the sleeves. The material of the dress was quite pretty!

  2. Ms. B says:

Hailee Steinfeld is 15 so forgive the headband. II consider it appropriate if perhaps a little iill advised. But that Marchesa dress is absolutely dreamy. When I initially saw it on the red carpet it took my breath away with it's airiness and flattering silhouette. She was a vision.

  3. TrailBlaizer says:

LEAVE NATALIE PORTMAN ALONE! She is perfect.

  4. Belle says:

No. The pink Valentine's Day card she wore to the Globes was atrocious. She is not even close to red carpet perfection this year.

  5. I don't think there's anything wrong with a 14 (not 15)-year-old wearing a headband, & I don't even think it looks bad with the dress – which, by the way, she helped design, so I'm inclined to forgive any small sins.

  6. Ms. B says:

Surburban Sweetheart – You are so very correct. Whatever we might think of the hair and it's accessory (which actually upon second, third and fourth glance really does show off her perfectly shaped face and makeup) the dress and how well she wore it, makes it a winner. Period.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
