You Better Watch Yourself

Feb 9, 2011

A few weeks back, I was sitting with some non-Hill friends when I picked up my Blackberry to check the time, because like many people in the Age of the Smart Phone, I’ve stopped wearing a watch.  The second my hand touched the keyboard, my friend completely blew a gasket.  (Apparently, regular people hate when Crackberry addicts use right in from of them.) So I decided that it was probably time to buy a real watch.

I went to Nordstrom and tried on 20 watches.  There were tortoise shell ones, lucite ones, silver ones, rose gold ones and even one with a woven Burberry band.  But none of them would do.  They all seemed so heavy and cumbersome after years of free-wristing it.

I went to a sporting good store and tried my Dad’s brand of choice, Luminox.  But if you think the company that makes watches for Navy Seals makes one to fit these skinny, chicken wrists, you are wrong.  Even the ladies’ size hung from my arm like a boat anchor.  But then, I spotted them, so tiny in their little plastic cases, and I was in love.

Pixel Moda Sport Watch ($20)

Now, I know what you’re going to say, “Belle, why are you telling time with a digital Silly Band?,” but you are so wrong.

First off, I chose the Pixel Moda watch because it’s light, less than 10 grams.  So light, that I completely forget that I’m wearing it.  This is a good thing.

Secondly, while it comes in over 20 really fun and sometimes chic colors, you can buy basic shades as well.  I chose a standard grey but they also have black.

So you don’t have to buy the hot pink one, unless you really want to.  When I buy a second one, I’m going for the pretty royal purple shade above.

Third, when I don’t want people to notice the watch, I just turn the face to the inside, and all you see is a thin (1/4 inch) rubber band.  Toss on a couple of bangles and you’d never know that I was wearing a watch at all.

Fourth, it fits my wrist.  To give you a sense of what an accomplishment this is, let me explain that with my last, metal watch, I had to have a jeweler remove nine links to make it fit.  Nine.  So having a watch that comes in small, medium and large is awesome.

Lastly, it works up to 99ft under water.  Of course, if I’m three atmospheres under the sea, I have bigger problems than what time it is.  But I guess this means it’s waterproof and durable.

So while the watch may look a bit silly, it’s cost effective and perfect for someone who wants to own a timepiece not made by RIM.  Now I can tell what time it is without making my friends feel like my e-mail addiction is more important than whatever it is they’re prattling on about.  Just kidding, honey, just kidding.

I have one in white! They are very trendy up in the New England area….sold all over stores on Cape Cod and in Boston, etc.

  2. SmallFry says:

I love them! I also think the “drink responsibly” watch from the WIT collection is hilarious. I definitely need one of these because my nice watch has been getting so beat up from wearing it to work every day!

  3. KLo says:

Will they work on a … “strong” wrist? I typically only have to take 2-3 links out of the average women's watch. I love them, but don't want to cut off the circulation to my left hand.

  4. Belle says:

    KLo-
They make them in small (what I wear) medium and large, so you should be able to find a size for you.

  5. Kc says:

    Belle,
I am of the chicken wristed clan myself and found my savior in a slim citizen watch (EH3850). Taking links out isn't as much of an issue, but when the face of a watch is larger than the width of my wrist, it looks clownish quickly. This one, flipped backwards, it looks like a little silver bracelet, and faced correctly looks proportional to my wrist. And available on Ebay under $50. You know in case you don't want to wear a rubber watch some days.

ew. maybe the picture doesn't do it justice, but even in grey i think i would dislike this…just looks plasticy-space-age-y.

  7. K says:

Ooohhh… I love this. I can't stand most watches because I also have a small wrist and don't like dealing with them clanging against my desk and tables all day. But I could get into this. I'll have to think about it.

  8. BB says:

Normally I second your recommendations, but this one I can't get behind. It's hideous, not fashionable and shouldn't be worn unless you are at the gym tracking your heart rate.

  9. Belle says:

It's funny you say that because I have a friend who HATES sport watches, but she loves this one. It's so small and discrete in person, No one even notices that you're wearing it. So if you don't want a metal watch, this is a good alternative.

  10. Huh. I hadn't seen that before. I've gone watch shopping a couple times and come away discouraged due to the chicken wrist situation. Even if they can take links out, it ends up looking weird to only have, like, 4 links left in the watch. I'll have to check that one out!

  11. MCWS says:

I'm sorry to say, but I think this is the Ugg of watches. You can do better.

I have a tiny, delicate Seiko with dual-time faces I bought at a consignment store — perfect for when I'm overseas. In the here and now, I wear a Timex expedition watch — I'm wedded to the practicality of the indigo light and easy-set alarm. I have dressed it up with a Michele crimson patent leather band, and another Michele alligator band in peacock blue. I get a lot of compliments on my Timex/Michele combination.

  12. cia says:

I saw these at Kiskadee in Del Ray (Alexandria) and loved them. Reading your blog post reminded me about them, so I ordered one and it came today! So excited… except after I set the time, I can't get it to “stick.” I set it at 11:09 and it just stayed at 11:09 without the minutes going forward at all. Do you remember how you got yours to set?

And in case you're curious, I got the one in “mint,” which looks mint on the site but is really more of a Tiffany blue/green in real life.

  13. Belle says:

    cia-

Go to the pixelmoda website. I had to do that too, the directions were easy to understand.

  14. Hae says:

kgb deals (a groupon-like site) is offering $10 for $20 worth of pixelmoda watches right now if anyone was interested in purchasing the slim watch pursuant to belle's recommendation at 50% off. https://www.kgbdeals.com/national/deals/12019/50-off-timepieces-from-pixelmoda-nationwide. the range of colors is pretty impressive.

    enjoy!! 🙂
