Three Ways: Tortoise Shell Flats

Feb 8, 2011

As I said this morning, if you’re going to wear flats, do yourself a favor and make sure they’re not boring flats.  Boring flats say, “I’m practical because I have zero imagination.”

Tortoise shell flats are perfect for any wardrobe because they work with black and brown.  And most importantly, they’re seasonless and can be worn for almost any occasion.  Here are some suggestions for how to integrate these shoes into your wardrobe.

This is a very simple work look, just a skirt and a sweater.  But even thought it’s not the most innovative professional outfit, if the pieces fit well, this look can still be chic.

This is the kind of look that your throw on when you’re in a rush and have no idea what to wear, like on a Monday morning when you still wish it was the weekend.

If you’re headed to a concert or a movie this Saturday night, it might be in your best interest to skip the high heels.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone out with friends for dessert and a drink in sky-high heels and wound up tacking on a few more stops.  My feet did not thank me in the morning.

This look pairs an all black ensemble with some different textures (lace and denim), some shine (gold jewelry and accessories) and some stylish flats.  It’s all you need for a night out, especially if it turns into an all-nighter.

The Polyvore set can be found here.

When you just want a relaxed look for Sunday brunch or shopping in Georgetown, a slouchy cardigan is just the ticket.  I also love this cross pendant necklace for a shot of glamour, and the orange bag for color.

  1. MM says:

What color tights do you wear with colored flats and a skirt in the winter? I find black tights with colored flats awkward sometimes.

  2. Belle says:

Either the tights must match the shoes or the skirt. But I agree, colored flats do look a touch weird with black tights.

You don't have to wear tights though, I find it perfectly acceptable to wear nude fishnets or go bare legged.

These three looks are ah-ma-zing! I need to make the brunch look happen, especially since my DH gave me both an orange Kate Spade and an orange Coach patent wristlet this past Christmas. Thank you, Belle. You're brilliant!

  4. LT says:

Second the question from MM – what color tights? Love the shoes!

Also — I thought you really didn't care for 'animal print' anything — tortoise shell looks a lot like cheetah print….um, an animal….

  5. Belle says:

There's a BIG difference between a subtle tortoise shell and a bright yellow cheetah print.

  6. SEW says:

I am now fighting an inner battle as to whether I want to spend $80 on those flats. They're perfect. Damn you.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
