Happy Hour: Back in Black

Jan 21, 2011

As you know, I’m a big fan of the website Rent the Runway.  Being able to rent cocktail and formal attire is so much more fiscally responsible for me than buying a new dress every time.  And I love the large selection of stylish dresses and the great accessories.  (If you’d like to join RTR, click here.)

I almost never wear black dresses to D.C. parties because Washingtonian women ALL wear black dresses, and I hate to fade into the sea of black.  If you’re going to wear black, you should at least wear something interesting.  And this dress, by Moschino, is definitely interesting.

I love the different textures in the fabric and the dramatic cowl neck.  This dress will look great in photos, and it certainly makes a good impression.  And if you need a chic cocktail to go with your chic LBD, I have just the thing, a berry-citrus recipe altered to my exact specifications.

The Blackened Berry

2 oz Vodka
2 sage leaves
1/4 oz fresh lime juice
3/4 oz black elderberry concentrate
1 oz pomegranate juice

Put all the ingredients in a shaker and, after shaking, strain into a cocktail glass.

It’s dark.  It’s chic.  And it’s perfectly delicious.

Happy Hour

Sounds good. Where does one find black elderberry concentrate?

  2. Belle says:

On Amazon. I altered the recipe to be less sage-y and more citrus-y, because I thought the sage flavor was too strong for me.

  3. I don't go to a lot of dress up events, but I never wear black either. I'm glad at least one other person out there agrees with me!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
