Faux Pas: Think Pink?

Nov 22, 2010

At what point does the wearing of pink streaks in your hair cease to be adorable?

Is it when you pass the age of 25?

Is it after your marriage to the Sk8tr Boi ends in divorce?

Or is it when your entire punk-meets-cute image becomes so grating that even your 14-year-old fans move beyond glitter embellished Airwalks and neon tinged sweatshirts?

Whenever that point is, Avril Lavigne has definitely passed it.

A woman who is on the sharp drop to thirty has no business streaking her hair with baby pink highlights.  Avril is stuck in a time warp called 2003 hoping that the rest of us will stay in the past with her.  But music fans embrace artists who evolve (see: Madonna) and leave behind those who stagnate.

It’s a fine thing to have a look that works for you or a signature that is just yours.  But at some point, you have to ask yourself, “Is this look dated?”  And if you’re a divorcee, in your late-twenties, with neon streaks in your hair, the answer should be yes.

It’s a difficult thing to grow up, especially when you peaked in your late teens, but unless you’re Peter Pan it has to be done.  So put away the hair dye and dress your age.

My best friend (26) has a “pink flash” in her hair and it's fabulous. Of course, she's a married English literature PhD student, not a divorced former pop-punk singer. Either way, it's something I would never do myself but support for other people.

Didn't Gwen Stefani streak her hair pink post-30? I love her style and think it is more than Avril is totally effing annoying than that her hair is dyed inappropriately for her age.

  3. Ana says:

AMEN! Somehow I feel that it's okay for Gwen Stefani, but Avril just seems like a washed up pop singer who things that dying her hair pink will make her “punk”. Her entire outfit seems more suitable for a teen also. She just hasn't grown up yet.

  4. Stephanie says:

I agree—the problem with Avril is not the pink hair, it's that she's so stuck in the past (and so stuck on a tired shtick that was juvenile and annoying even when she was relevant). One of my dear friends is a music journalist in her late 30s who lives in L.A. and has a surfer girl/hippie vibe. She dyes hot pink streaks in her hair sometimes, and it totally works on her.

  5. Belle says:

It's a good point about Stefani. I think when it comes down to Avril, what upsets me is that I don't feel this is authentic. I find her “look” to be disingenuous and fake, whereas with Gwen, I see it as authentic.

I too have a friend who's 27 with cobalt blue streaks (she works at a fashion house) and that doesn't bother me. But also remember, that Stefani wasn't always pink and isn't always pink. He look evolves and changes while Avril's stays the same from 17-26.

So maybe it's the fakeness and the sameness not the streaks. I guess we'll call it the Stefani factor.

The woman who does my hair has big pink streaks in her long somewhat unkept black hair.
I'm very pleased with how she cuts my hair but her own appearance isn't an indication of her skill.

The sharp drop to thirty? Ouch!

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
