A Colorful Fall Outfit

Nov 4, 2010

When the weather grows cold, many women put away their Summer colors and break out the black.  Lots of black.  Why women think that chilly weather means you have to dress like you’re on your way to a funeral is beyond me.  So here is a colorful outfit that is perfect for Fall.

1.  Dream Alexie Sweater (J.Crew, $70)

2. Wool Crepe Pencil Skirt (J.Crew $78 + 25-percent-off thru Saturday)

3.  Ciao Bella Toni Boots (Piperlime, $149)

4. Nicole Miller Tights (Bluefly, $20)

5.  Jeweled Ribbon Necklace (Newport News, $29)

What? You’ve never mixed mustard and plum before? Then you, darling, haven’t lived. Mix in a jeweled necklace in a myriad of colors to pull it all together, and you’ll like a million bucks.

Also, notice how I matched the color of the skirt to the color of the tights observing “Belle’s 2-out-of-3 Rule.”  Add a cognac (or grey if you prefer) boot, and you’ll be awash in warm Fall hues.  Enjoy!

    Love this!! Thanks.

  2. Daisy says:

Great outfit! I love every piece of it!

  3. KLo says:

    Adore this!

  4. Melissa says:

    That is pretty terrific.

I love how much you love those boots! I have them in black and it just tickles me how often they show up in your posts!

  5. Geaux says:

Mustard and Plum? Sounds like purple and gold to me – Geaux Tigers!

  6. Ashley says:

Shades of purple is my new favortie color. I will be buying this skirt. I love the boots, but I such a hard time finding boots that will fit over my calves. Shopping for boots can be very aggrevating.

  7. Lou says:

Nice. I'm wearing that sweater as we speak.

  8. ~M says:

Boo! I went to buy the skirt but it's sold out in my size.

  9. Katya says:

Random idea – maybe you could include a cheapskate version of your outfit ideas (including stuff from places like Target, TJMaxx, etc.). I know that the stuff for this outfit isn't THAT expensive, but I'm a semi-broke college student.

  10. Belle says:

Sorry, but I really can't afford to double my workload since this isn't a cheap fashion blog. But try searching Shopstyle for similar items.

  11. Jill says:

Regarding items at Target, etc., I love Target but sometimes a bargain sweater isn't such a bargain. A $20 acrylic sweater might pill up, wash poorly, and quickly turn unattractive. It might be more cost-effective to save up and get a more expensive but better quality wool or blend sweater that will last longer. That said, I think J. Crew is expensive and almost never buy anything full price there. The sales are constant, thankfully.

  12. Stephanie says:

I agree with Jill—it makes much more sense to pay $60 for a sweater that will last you for years than to pay $20 each year for a sweater that won't hold up. Scope out consignment shops and thrift stores in your area. You can get great jewelry at low prices on Etsy, and great deals on shoes at dsw.com, endless.com, piperlime.com and zappos.com. Before buying anything online, do a quick Google search for coupon codes—there are tons of them, making it unnecessary to ever pay full-price for clothes. Also, as a result of the recession, clothing swaps are pretty popular these days. Find out if there are any going on in your area, or coordinate one with friends or family members. Put the bulk of your wardrobe money toward some quality staples, and round it out with accessories and inexpensive pieces for layering.

  13. Kristen says:

That all looks great. I really like the necklace.

  14. C says:

As a poor college student as well, I look at what Belle says and get ideas. I wore an outfit somewhat similar recently that included a mustard corduroy skirt from Old Navy, navy blue button down from J. Crew, with navy tights from Target and a brown belt to finish it off.

  15. Gwen says:

Finally got the chance to try out this color combination! Thanks Belle!
Today I'm wearing a plum cowl neck sweater with a gray pencil skirt, black tights, and mustard color ballet flats.

  16. Belle says:

Sounds great. But next time, I would try grey tights. It will make the color combination more noticeable.

The Range: Eyelet Tops for Summer

Airy eyelet fabrics are one of my favorite spring/summer looks. White is, of course, the traditional fabric. But white is tough to wear when you have a toddler, so let’s go with navy this summer.
