PCT: The Ladies Auxiliary

Oct 5, 2010

If your campaign duties include tailing the candidate to speeches, site visits, and meetings with community groups (Rotary Club, Ladies Auxiliary, Kiwanis), then you need to be dressed like a professional but you don’t want to go for the full-DC and wear a suit.  So, what do you do?

Most campaigns maintain a rather lax dress code, so it’s amazing how far a jacket will go.  For today’s post, we’re pairing a structured tweed jacket with corduroys and simple flats for a look that is chic but subtle.

1.  Gilded Tweed Jacket (J.Crew, $298)

I am so in love with this jacket it’s criminal.  It’s really too bad that Christmas is so far away.

2.  Favorite V-Neck Tee (Gap, $10)

These t-shirts are still the best deal ever.  They wear well, fit well and if one gets ruined, you can just toss it out and not feel too bad.

3.  Paige Premium Denim Cords (Revolve Clothing, $148)

4.  Pollini Ribbon Oxford (Endless, $192)

5.  Kate Spade Faux Pearl Studs (Nordstrom, $45)

6. (not pictured) Rebecca Minkoff Mini-MAB (Bergdorf’s, $495)

This bag is still some of the best money that I’ve ever spent.  If I need to pack paperwork, or extra shoes for door knocking, or bottles of water (always important), I can fit it all in this bag.  It’s like a magic carpet bag.

Belle! Those oxfords are amazing. Until now, I have been completely opposed to the oxford trend. But those are perfect!

  2. E says:

They're also an extra 20% off on endless right now..

  3. Meg says:

Those shoes are fabulous! Time for me to jump on the oxford bandwagon!

  4. Rachel says:

I'm gong to be the odd one out and say those shoes do nothing for me. The are an almost exact replica of my three year-olds tap shoes and that's not something I'm okay with.

  5. KLo says:

I'm with Rachel on the shoes, but I [Rachel Zoe] die for that jacket. Love love love.

  6. Jessica says:

I am in love with this jacket but it's way out of my price range. Can you post as a tenth commandment so I can see an 'unpaid intern' version?

  7. Stephanie says:

Ditto KLo and Rachel—the second I saw those shoes, I thought “I had those in the '80s when I took tap lessons!”

LOVE the jacket, though. I wouldn't pay that much for anything from J.Crew, but it sure is nice to look at.

  8. N says:

I love the new layout of the items all in one picture, but the resulting tinier size doesn't view so well on my phone. Any chance you can make them bigger for future posts?

The PCT looks have been great so far! They're especially helping me out since I do not totally understand my office's “business casual” dress code after coming from an extremely professional Hill office. These seem to be working for me!

I love that handbag. I have had very bad luck with Old Navy so even at $10, I'll pass. I am still hunting to my perfect t.

The shoes? Well they don't say adult to me and even if I were a waifish early 20 something artist type who could probably pull this off, they say evening wear, not work shoes to me.

Unfortunately, 550px is as big as the space will allow.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
