The 62nd Emmy's: Belle's Worst Dressed

Aug 30, 2010

I always like to hear the bad news first because I hate to ruin the afterglow of the good news.  Thus, this year we’ll be talking about the Academy members who showed up to last night’s Emmy Awards looking less than stellar (and that’s being charitable) first.

Any time Kate Gosellin shows up on a red carpet, she will be at the top of my Worst Dressed list.  That is a promise and a public service.  It helps that she always looks like an aging prom queen who got lost on the way to the 30th Class Reunion.

Here’s hoping that her 15 minutes are almost up.

Don’t blame the stylist.  This is January Jones’ way of preparing for her next role: Little Bo Peep in Space.  I would also have accepted winner of the “Make a Dress from Solo Cups” contest.

Rita Wilson would like you to know that no chandeliers were hurt in the making of this outfit, but why she felt the need to wear a macramé poncho made of crystals is anyone’s guess.  And just when you think it can’t get any worse, you see the shoes.

Thank God, I’ve been drinking since breakfast.  Bless you champagne brunch.

Mindy Kaling looks like Wednesday Adams on her way to the prom.  But even if you can get past the dress, what do you say about the hair?  Do you hope that the mushroom-like growth emanating from her head is her idea of a joke?  After all, she is a comedy writer.

But if that’s the case, then…

What is Naya Rivera’s excuse?  Maybe she’s taking her breakup with Mark Salling extra hard?

Either way, a girl this gorgeous with a body this banging does not need to try so hard.

If she hadn’t been standing next to John Krasinski, I would never have believed that this boring gown belonged to Emily Blunt.  What would Miranda Priestly say about this tired sartorial selection?  Something backbiting and witty, no doubt.

Wanda Sykes in a liquid sequin column gown.  Something about this just doesn’t work.  On a related note, supportive undergarments are very important.

On a final note, Anna Paquin should have made this list.  But given that my beloved Alexander McQueen is no longer with us, I simply don’t feel right mocking his design on the Interwebs.  If I did, I would say that Paquin looked like a cross between Liberace and Queen Nefertiti.

Who was your worst dressed?

I agree with you for the most part, but I will say that while January Jones' dress isn't anything I'd wear, I don't really think it was that bad. It was nice to see something a little different and the picture you used is actually the worst I've seen of it. In that picture I totally get the Solo cup reference. The only other disagreement is on Anna Paquin. At first I saw the dress and thought “Dear Lord what is she wearing?” However after I got used to it I actually think it worked – but only on her. Anna has a habit of wearing things that I would hate on anyone except her, though I do hope she doesn't wear gold to the next awards show, I feel like that's all I see her in.

I agree with everything except for Kate and January. Quite frankly, I recoil whenever anyone criticizes Kate. Just seems like piling on and she doesn't really look THAT bad! January's dress is kinda of neat. I may dig it without the train. It's got to get annoying when everyone expects you to always look all Mad Men-y. I absolutely LOVE the color of Naya's dress…but…yeah..that's about it.

  3. D says:

I actually like January's dress….but completely agree on the rest!

  4. Alison M. says:

I'm actually quite intrigued by January Jones's dress. I think I would prefer it sans train, but I love the color, texture, and excitement of it. Then again maybe I was just bored with all the other gowns.

  5. I might've been the only person on the planet who liked January Jones' dress. And Anna Paquin's dress.

I HATED Heidi Klum's dress. With two more inches, it would've been perfect, but Heidi's too classy for such a trashy, short frock. Auf'd.

  6. Louisianna says:

the bodice on January's dress reminded me of cocktail umbrellas. that said, i still found the dress very interesting, and I loved the brilliant blue. her hair on the other hand – how very “blah”

I agree on all posts, Belle.

Why Kate Gosselin is still relevant is a mystery to me, and I wish she would go away…forever.

January Jones and her blue Jetson-like concoction have an overwhelmingly uncomfortable look, and her hair looked like she had just been through a hurricane. She is too gorgeous for such a mistake.

I'm not going to dignify Rita Wilson's outfit with any critique, but I think she should be locked in a dungeon and be beaten with those shoes until she learns her lesson. And poor Naya, in an obvious homage to Amy Winehouse, somehow confused 'red carpet glamour' and 'tranny drag queen couture' when selecting her overall look.

Two glaring omissions from this list – Lauren Graham, who looked like an Oreo cookie gone wrong, and Toni Collette, who has forgone her savvy fashion history and this year adopted old curtains from Grey Gardens as her Emmy gown inspiration.

  8. VA Gal says:

I actually like Emily Blunt's dress – it just doesn't match her coloring. However, I could see it being pretty on someone with different coloring.

  9. bills says:

Another extremely disappointing and shocking worst dressed has got to be Dianna Agron. Someone so young, fresh, and frankly drop dead gorgeous…dear Lord whoever styled her should be shot.

  10. Maggie says:

I also liked Emily Blunt's gown. It's elegant and a little whimsical; the part I can't get over is the matching eye makeup.
