BPGP: Volume and Softness?

Aug 25, 2010

For years, I’ve been looking for a volumizing shampoo and conditioner that moisturized without weighing my hair down.  But such a product has proven to be elusive.

Early on, I fell in love with Kerastase Volumactive Shampoo but the cost is prohibitive.  So I started buying it on eBay and shipping it in from France.  (Trust me, it sounds more glamorous than it is.)  But even then, I couldn’t swing the cost of my designer suds.

Since then I’ve been searching for a drugstore brand that might live up to the Kerastase hype.  Pantene?  Too heavy.  Tresemme?  Too drying.  L’Oreal Sulfate Free?  Please, this shampoo left my hair so oily I might as well have washed with mayonnaise.

I had almost given up hope of finding a drugstore brand that didn’t make my locks dry, limp or waxy.  Until I headed out West to stay with my family for a few days.

My brother doesn’t care what kind of shampoo he uses, so I’m glad that the Garnier Fructis Fortifying Body Boost was on sale that day.  The shampoo gives my hair a little lift without drying out the ends.  This is critically important.

After a few days, I’m still pleased with the bouncy volume that this product provides.  Of course the ultimate test will come when I step off of the airplane in D.C.  There really is no better testing ground for beauty products than the nation’s capital in August.  Someone should open a lab, or just start sending me samples.  I’d be happy to test run them for you.

Did your brother by the Shampoo for you or was that just what he had lying around? Either way that's a lucky find. 🙂

Try L'Oreal Vive Pro! The ingredients are almost identical to what's found in Kerastase (which is manufactured by L'Oreal).

My stylist recommended the Dove brand shampoos and they really are wonderful, reasonably priced, and do not leave residue on your hair. If you put a little of the Dove volumizing mouse in your hair that also works wonders without leaving your hair sticky or weighed down.

Keep us posted when you get back to DC! Nothing works on my hair in this climate.

This is my favorite shampoo! I have tried many more expensive brands but non leave my hair as soft and fluffy as this. It has that “just leaving the salon” feeling-no buildup whatsoever.

I like using So Sexy Volumizing by Victoria's Secret in the winter. I think it's $10 a bottle, but there's always sales/specials goign on at VS, so I've never bought it at full price. It leaves my hair feeling soft, smells great and definitely adds volume to any waves/curls I style in my hair. I'm sure it would be great in the summer for other people, but the humidity in the city adds volume to my hair anyways, so I've never needed it during this time of year.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
