Happy Hour: An Unexpected Combination

Aug 6, 2010

I don’t know why, but I really like this dress.  It’s not a dress that I would normally choose, but sometimes it’s nice to try something different–like a cocktail with watermelon and basil.  Not a combination that you would usually think of, but it’s refreshingly delicious.

BCBG Runway Banded Dress (ShopBop, $265)

Watermelon-Basil Margaritas

Ingredients

7 1/2 pounds seedless watermelon, rind removed, fruit cut into 1-inch cubes
4 teaspoons superfine sugar
6 ounces (3/4 cup) silver tequila
24 basil leaves, plus sprigs for garnish
3 ounces (1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons) triple sec
6 cups small ice cubes

Directions

Place 24 watermelon cubes on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Cover, and freeze at least 1 hour.

Puree remaining watermelon and the sugar in a blender until smooth. Pass through a sieve lined with cheesecloth into a bowl. (You should have 3 cups.)

Place tequila and basil in a glass pitcher, and crush with a wooden spoon. Stir in watermelon juice and triple sec.

Place watermelon cubes in glasses. Using a cocktail shaker, mix 3/4 cup margarita with 1 cup ice. Strain into a glass. Repeat. Serve garnished with basil.

Happy Hour

Pass on the dress, but pass me one of those cocktails please!

  2. Stephanie says:

I just had watermelon-basil sorbet the other day, and it was delicious, so I’ll definitely be trying this cocktail! I love the dress, but I think it’d be too short for me to actually wear anyplace.

    Dress – no, thanks
    Cocktail – yes, please!

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
