How Soon, Is Too Soon?

Aug 4, 2010

Every year, I’m horrified by how early the stores start selling Fall fashions.  I simply don’t want to think about tights, corduroy, wool and tall boots when it’s 101 degrees outside.  And I certainly don’t want to spend money on something that I can’t wear for four to six months.  It just seems nonsensical.

And as a fashion blogger, I’m always trying to figure out the proper balance between covering the Summer clothes I want to wear and the Fall clothes that are already in magazines, in stores and even on sale racks.  So this year, I thought I would ask for input from the peanut gallery:

When do you ladies think I should start posting in earnest about Fall fashion?

Leave your thoughts in the comments.  I’m anxious to hear what the CHS readership thinks is the optimum time to start posting.

xoxo

I’m preparing for my end of summer trip (if we remain in recess) and scouring magazines and “shop by outfit” features on web sites for packing tips and outfit ideas. It has been terribly unsuccessful because, as you mentioned, it’s all about leather mini-skirts, fur-trimmed everything and layers that are impossible to immitate in 3-digit temperatures. I need some serious LBD innovation and summer outfit advice to get packing!

  3. Rachel says:

I think after Labor Day is a fair time to start covering them. We might not be ready to wear them, but helping us prepare for the fall at that time seems fair.

  4. Ms. B says:

labor day “ish” is definitely a good time. Actually, a lot of fall fashions go on sale at that time
and the seasonal trends are pretty well established.

  5. Melissa says:

My initial thought is after Labor Day. I know that things happen fast (I saw Halloween candy in the store the other day!) but, even though there is virtue in planning ahead, I’d prefer to read things that are pertinent to NOW.

I think Labor Day is a fair compromise, since it’s still hot here for quite a while after, but it’s the generally accepted time to start thinking autumn.

  6. Page says:

    September.

  7. Alexandra says:

While Sept makes sense, please bear in mind that many DC workers (not simply Hill staffers, but also private sector workers like myself) have farrrr more time to shop in August and start planning their fall wardrobe. Maybe it’d make sense to plan ahead, ladies.

Plus—all designers have already shown their fall lines. We know what the trends are….

  8. Caroline says:

I think Labor Day would make the MOST sense, but I’d vote for something later, mid September

  9. Lindsay says:

As a teacher, I equate going back to school with the beginning of fall. DCPS returns August 23, a week before Labor Day — just in time to start planning what pieces I’d like to add to my wardrobe.

  10. R says:

I think it’d be nice to have a couple of posts on fall fashions sprinkled in throughout August. Even though it has been many (many many) years since I’ve gone back to school, August still feels like the appropriate time to go “Back to School” shopping.

I’d also like to see a few posts on how to make my summer wardrobe feel newer and more exciting. I’m so bored right now!

  11. KLo says:

I adore fall. For me, the sooner the better. But I agree with R – sprinkle some in throughout August, but hold off until mid-September or later for it to be truly fall. I’d also love to see how to mix fall style with Indian Summer heat …

  12. Sara says:

Labor Day. Intersperse posts with the best lingering summer sales. It’s back to school and back to work after recess– let us down easy!

  13. Kelseytc says:

I am going to Europe September 2nd for 3 1/2 months and am already thinking about what I will need there in December.

So I would be fine with things next week.

  14. Dr. Jean Grey says:

I think you can start doing boots, light coats and fall sweaters after August recess. No winter coats until at least mid-September please!

  15. VA Gal says:

I already start planning out what I’m going to pick up for fall by mid-August, so I’m happy to see fall posts going up by that time. I tend to be pretty much over buying new summer stuff by that point.

  16. S says:

II agree, the idea of putting on a piece of my fall wardrobe now makes me feel faint, I do unfortunately have to start financially planning now instead! It would be nice to see some pieces in late August so we can start saving for key items in advance. Boots and coats especially require intense strategic planning!

  17. Sara Lang says:

After Labor Day. I know the clothes are on sale now, but particularly in DC where it will be hot for months, August is just too soon.

  18. M says:

How about the week leading up to Labor Day as a special to get ready for sales?

  19. Julie says:

The sooner the better for me. The temps are already in the 50s at night and low 70s during the day where I’m going to be moving to next week. I love fall fashion anyway. It’s my favorite time of year.

  21. I don’t mind early coverage. What I do mind is when stores in Texas already have full lines of fall fashions in August – um, it is 100 degrees here and it will be till the end of September. I wish the fashion seasons could be adjusted regionally.

  22. lorrwill says:

When the clothes are must haves and the prices are too good to refuse?

  23. Espie says:

    september.
who thinks about this stuff before the temperature is at LEAST in the 70s?
Wool at 95 degrees? No thanks.

But really, this is your blog-do what you want.
I’m just happy you do it 🙂

  24. Rory says:

I say start now. I’m already planning and shopping for my fall wardrobe as we speak, and would love some ideas. As another poster mentioned, I’d like to be able to save up for nice boots and coats because starting in October I really don’t have a lot in the way of extra money, what with birthdays (both parents and two sisters), holidays, and traveling. I know it seems silly to be shopping for sweaters in this heat, but it gives me something to look forward to.

  25. K says:

My vote – post for shopping as the sales come up and new noteable lines come out. Post for styling with the temperature.

  26. Allison says:

I start thinking about Fall clothes when school is starting. (I’m a grad student.) I like Rory’s idea, post styling with the current weather, and review sales/new items with the ‘fashion season’, which is always about one season ahead.

  27. Greta says:

    Last week of recess.

  28. Kim says:

Funny, I almost wrote today asking whether tall boots are still in, because I wanted to buy some off-season. But I also don’t want to hear about other Fall fashion until September.
