The Great Intern Search Announcement

Jul 27, 2010

Friends, Countrymen…Fashionistas…lend me your ears…

What?  Too much?

Shakespearian delusions of grandeur aside, the Great CHS Intern search has finally come to an end.  I was deeply touched by the outpouring of support for this project both during the application phase and then, in the comments during intern week.  It was great to see everyone turn out to help select the new contributor because while you’re stuck with me, I wanted you to have at least some say in who I bring into the fold.

While all of the Intern Week prospects were fantastic in their own right, I have decided to hire only two: Alison and CJ.

I enjoyed the different ideas and perspectives that each candidate brought to the table. I made my final decision based on three factors.  Age: I wanted someone old enough to attend events, and with a more developed sense of style.  The post: I wanted to see a good writing voice and a strong perspective.  Fit: Did the Candidate fit the CHS brand?

CJ’s post was probably the most similar to the content that you already see on CHS, and the commenters loved her, so I decided that she would be a good fit.  Alison had a slightly trendier perspective than I do, but an enjoyable writing style that complimented the tone of the blog.  I really look forward to reading their posts in the weeks to come, and I hope you do as well.

Lastly, you should know that the most difficult decision made during this process was whether to include Jamie.  Blending in a perspective on men’s fashion is something that I’ve tried in the past with mixed results.  But given that my last polling numbers suggested that the blog was more than 95-percent female, I’m not sure that a male voice would be a valuable addition.  Also, I’ve always considered the men’s style blog District Cut to be like CHS’s slightly more fashionable brother, and I didn’t want to create competing content.

To all those who entered the Great CHS Intern Search and to everyone who commented, thank you.  It was really great to hear everyone’s perspective and I can’t wait to get some fresh (non-Belle) written content.

Also, if you applied and weren’t chosen, a little birdie told me that Makeda at Glamazon Diaries is also looking for an intern.  If you want to speak with her, visit her site or DM her on Twitter.

Yay! I was actually coming over here just now to ask whether or not you’d chosen an intern! Welcome to Alison and CJ!

  2. Dr. Jean Grey says:

Woo-hoo, great choices. Can’t wait to read more from them. High-fives and a few “good game” acknowledgments to the other contestants.

  3. Sarah says:

Horray! Please let us know what Jamie is up to, or if he has a blog. I want to follow him as well. . .

  4. Belle says:

    Sarah-

I asked District Cut’s editor if he was interested in hiring him. Beyond that, I don’t know what he is up to, but I wish him the best.

    Belle

  5. Jamie says:

Hey everyone. Jamie here. Thanks so much for the support and kind words. I was sort of sitting on my hands waiting on this to pan out, but I’m starting to get my own site together. Since at least one person (thanks Sarah!) seems interested, I’ll figure out a way to let ya’ll know when it gets up and running. Hopefully it’ll only be a few days.

  6. Belle says:

    Jamie-

If you need any technical advice, etc. Let me know. Squarespace costs a little ($15 a month or so), but if you don’t have CSS or HTML, it’s great. Let me know.

  7. Meg says:

Great selections and can’t wait to read their new additions to the blog!

  8. Drew says:

As a male reader, I’m sad-sad that you didn’t choose Jamie.

Still, thanks for the blog — it’s a delight.

  9. hillybilly says:

Yes! Alison was my favorite pick. Most appropriate choice for CapHillStyle “intern” – stands out alone in her own style yet would make for interesting contribution.

CJ – I’d enjoy her but… anonymous staffer! The snark and style know-how-to is good yet it’ll be nice to have a face repping. Thus, I look forward to Alison and CJ very much for separate set of reasons!

  10. Hae says:

Great choices. I’m so glad that Alison will be contributing to the blog!!

  11. Stephanie says:

Thrilled to hear this! Alison was my favorite, followed by Jamie–so I’m looking forward to Alison’s contributions to CHS and to checking out Jamie’s new site.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
