Rant & Rave by Amy

Jul 16, 2010

Hello Capitol Hill Style Readers! Get ready for something that is bound to become a weekly favorite of yours, Rant & Rave. We all have things that get under our skin that we can bond over; leggings as pants, Uggs and miniskirts, visible muffin tops, and variety of other forms of torture forced upon us on a daily basis. Fortunately, the world is equally full of things we all love; a good shoe sale, f-underwear, and becoming a Gold Care member at Loehmann’s. And for my inaugural post, I’ll share my most recent shopping nightmare but don’t worry we’ll end on a positive note with one of my most coveted items this summer.

Rant: Suit Shopping

Does anyone actually like suit shopping? I have never enjoyed the experience, I hate pants and I hate jackets (which to be honest is most likely the source of my displeasure). My first move was toward the suit sets. There was a fabulous sale at Dillard’s (it’s a southern department store and I was home for the weekend) on some luxurious Anne Klein and Tahari suit sets. Unfortunately I found myself facing a dilemma that I’m sure many of you face, my tops and bottoms are unfortunately disproportionate in the eyes of the suit set making gods.

Beautiful Tahari Skirt suit was down to around $85 from $139.

Glorious pantsuit that I was actually 6 sizes different from jacket to slacks, down to $105 from $199.

So on to separates I will venture in hopes of finding some matched

Rave: One Piece Swimsuits

While shopping for swimsuits is not the most enjoyable way to spend my time, one pieces have come in to save the day. Now one-piece suits are the height of style, and my move to college was not the most form friendly decision of my life but now my form can be flattered and fashionable in a one-piece swimsuit. Unfortunately I’ve yet to find the perfect one for me, but I have started browsing online and found some pieces that I really want. Do you have any that you are coveting?

I haven’t found the right suit waiting in store yet, so I fear I may have to turn to the internet. A good friend of mine turned me onto Shabby Apple, which some to die for suit for summer.

Love the ruffles, love the coverage, and the price is not so bad. This Sutherland Red Ruffle suit is $58.

The other suit I saw on Asos, is a little edgier whether or not it’s flattering is questionable. But it’s $47.71, lovely.

Hope you guys liked my entry! I would love to be a contributor, please comment and tell Belle how much you like Rant&Rave and Amy Chin!

  1. Rachel says:

So, she features a swimsuit Belle has already featured and tells us that sometimes our tops don’t match our bottoms? Moving on.

  2. Stacey says:

    A) she sounds crazy. Her writing is really disjointed, B) she’s missing a period at the end of the “rant” section, C) there is no “style” in this post. As Anthony would say, “hated it”.

  3. Chelsea says:

Yeah, the lack of punctuation in this post is driving me crazy. Come back Belle!

  4. Dr. Jean Grey says:

I like the concept of “rant and rave,” but as the judges on Top Chef or Project Runway would say, the execution failed. I mean “nay” suits, “yay” swimsuits? Yea, um, me, too. It’s work versus summer playtime. Big demerit for showcasing a swimsuit Belle already panned. Sidenote: I would love to see someone, in real life, actually look good in one of those monokini deals. I don’t get them. Only girls are rail thin look good in them and if you are that skinny you’re gonna wear a skimpy two piece. That’s the reality of that.

  5. K. Hill says:

    #teamCJ all the way!

  6. Stephanie says:

She can’t write or punctuate properly. She’s also boring (wait, not all women are exactly proportional? Alert the press!). She has very pretty hair, but I’d hate to see another of her posts.

  7. Kelly says:

Please never, ever again let this tween post on your blog. Clearly she’s clueless, regarding fashion and punctuation.

  8. LT says:

There is just so much wrong here. Please Belle. No.

  9. EB says:

My vote is hands down Allison. She was the most mature writer, and managed to create a post that was both relatable and funny.

  10. Stephanie says:

I’m with EB. I’d love to see more from Alison. More from Amy (well, or any of the others except for Jamie–loved him, too) would just make me cringe.

  11. Daisy says:

Amy is my least favorite. She is not a good writer, she seemed to be trying too hard, the post was too long and it was not very interesting. I was also annoyed that she highlighted something Belle posted a few weeks ago (Shabby Apple). Does she read this blog?

  12. lulu says:

She sounds like a very nice girl, fun to be around, but sorry the writing and content is just not up to par.

The lack of punctuation makes it confusing, at first I thought she suggested to wear a swimsuit if you can’t find a suit that fits…

  13. Cara says:

Not impressed. Aside from recycling your own material (Belle, does this girl even read your blog?), this post isn’t smart, witty, or well written. Suit shopping and bathing suit shopping have been troublesome for decades.

  14. K says:

This post makes no sense, it’s full of errors and I got nothing from it. I have zero fashion sense if left to my own devices and yet, I could have written this post.

Side note: I’m really getting sick of the shabby apple suggestions I keep seeing everywhere. That shop is completely overrated. Mod Cloth and other vintage inspired sites have much better stuff, better quality and the same price point.

  15. Dr. Jean Grey says:

Second on nixing Shabby Apple. I ordered two dresses from them. Horrible quality. Like starchy muslin. One I had to send back. The other I think I’ll end up Goodwill-ing. Ugh.

  16. Jessica says:

I’ve heard other negative comments about Shabby Apple. I love Mod Cloth and the quality of their dresses, but I’m not thrilled with their swimsuit collection. Have either of you tried this company: https://www.popinaswimwear.com/jantzen-vamp-maillot-bathing-suit-swimwear-c-61.html The swimsuits look really cute, but on-line shopping is so hit or miss.

  17. Heather says:

    Poor writing and meh style…next!

  18. Dr. Jean Grey says:

Jessica-Those are cute! I kinda love that red swimdress. Jantzen is a good swimwear company, but I don’t think you can risk online shopping for swimwear. There’s too many potential issues with lining, fit and fabric quality. You could probably do it if you know your sizing with Jantzen pieces though.

  19. K says:

Jessica- I hadn’t seen that site before, they are really cute. I’ve never attempted online swimwear shopping, although it might be preferable to try on the unflattering things in the safety of your own bedroom instead of a dressing room. I’d say if they have a good return policy, go for it.

I like Anthropologie’s swimsuit collection, though they are a bit pricey.

Full disclosure: the last bathing suit I bought was a tankini off the sale rack at Old Navy. I bought the pieces separately and later realized that the bottoms were maternity. But they fit great, look cute with the top and each piece was only $8 so I kept them and have been wearing them for two seasons now. Thus, you may want to take my opinion with a grain of salt. 😉

  20. Anon says:

She seems lovely, personality-wise, but her writing isn’t up to par with CHS’ standards. I followed a link on her Twitter and stumbled across her Tumblr. Great photos, but I don’t think I could stomach writing like this on my favorite DC blog:

    https://lefttexas.tumblr.com/post/254522085/people-watching
    People Watching
More often then I skip class to people watch, the time my class starts brings out very interesting characters. Girls trudging like Zombies to class in their heels, booties barely clad in heather grey leggings, and a mix of poorly dressed hippy/punk/wangsters.

I don’t think her stream of consciousness writing measures up to the tailored, concise and witty-to-boot style Belle has honed with CHS. Personally loved Alison!

  21. Ana says:

Did she say Dillards is a southern department store? Because there are definitely Dillard’s up north!

  22. Melissa says:

    No.

I think everyone else has covered what I want to say, but I figured another down vote wouldn’t hurt.

  23. Andrea says:

Oh my god. Did she even re-read this entry before publishing? No, no, NO.

  24. Bree says:

    No please.
