Intern Search: Meet Amy

Jul 16, 2010

Hometown: Houston, Texas

Profession/Major: Public Communication and Political Science

Style Icon: My mother is very stylish, and gave me a solid understanding of what looks good on my body. I don’t have a celebrity icon or anything like that, but I respect women who don’t adapt to trends but let the trends adapt to them.

Blog and/or Twitter Handle: twitter.com/amychin (NSFW)

Any special skills (Photoshop, CSS, etc.): Photoshop, InDesign, Some movie cutting up on mac

Favorite Designer: Michael Kors

Favorite Retail Line: I live in the gap, it’s my go to for sales and quality pieces.

Favorite Piece in Your Wardrobe: I have a woven belt I got from the Coldwater Creek outlet online that has rather unexpectedly become my go to belt for the summer.

Piece You are Currently Coveting: Asos one piece mesh cutout black bathing suit.

Favorite Beauty/Skincare Product: Covergirl Lashblast Mascara

It’s Friday night. Your phone rings. It’s Anna Wintour and she wants to take you to dinner.  Quick, what do you wear?: Jeffrey Campbell Unicorn heels, dark wash skinnys, black silk tank, oversized vest with many glitzy-glam pins. Chic, fun, casual… if she doesn’t like it she can deal.

In 200 words or less, tell us how you can contribute a fresh perspective to Capitol Hill Style.

I’m a good Southern Girl with my own serious sense of style; I love color, I love statement pieces, and I have absolutely no fear. Fingerless leather gloves to work? I think so! Mr. T-esque chains to class? You only live once! And the only way you’ll catch me in Nike tempo shorts outside of the gym is dead. I live, love, and ooze bold on a student budget. I can breathe some Texan charm into Capitol Hill Style; fierce independent style that knows no limits.

In 140 characters, tell us why you want this internship.

My life is in my closet, I am most happy when I’ve put on something that I feel represents me. It wasn’t until recently that I embraced the idea that this happiness should maybe be more then a hobby, and that I can actually do something with my interest in fashion and style. This internship is my first step into a world that before now I was just a spectator, and it may be a small step and I will most likely still be spectator but this opportunity gives me the chance to get a taste of something I realized I want in my life.

  1. DCGal says:

Sigh. Once again, I like her self-description (and her hair!) but the writing needs a ton of editing. Ok, back to work.

  2. Kelseytc says:

She is also unable to follow directions. 140 characters- not words.

Remember brevity is the soul of wit.

  3. Dr. Jean Grey says:

“Fingerless leather gloves to work? I think so!” I think not! And, I don’t really think “high quality” when I think of GAP. It’s more like, “What crappy t-shirt could I get for summer I could destroy and not feel that bad about.” That said, I didn’t hate her interview. Didn’t like it much, either. I like her hair more than anything she said. That can’t be a good thing. Because, she has great hair and I don’t mean it in a bad way.

  4. Stephanie says:

Definitely not. She can’t follow directions (words =/= characters), and her sense of style sounds more Vegas than D.C.

  5. eh says:

I really like her as a person. As in, I’d want to be friends with her. However, her writing needs improvement. I think it would be wonderful if the blog had a perspective from a girl who isn’t a size 2, but it would be nice if the intern selected had a sense of what is expected in the professional world. I don’t want to read about appropriate collegiate fashion.

  6. Erica says:

    Meh. nothing special to me.

  7. Leila says:

She is cute as a button but her fashion sense is not up to par. I look to Cap Hill Style for the fashion forward “it” pieces that I can wear on the Hill. Someone who does not even like suits can’t possibly give any added value to this amazing blog.

  8. Rachel says:

Agree with the other comments. I would want to be friends with her, but her taste level is not up to Cap Hill Style standards. Fingerless gloves in the office?? Please, my old hill office would have laughed me out of the building if I went to work in those. Also, I really wish these intern applicants could follow directions. 140 characters is obviously a Twitter exercise. If Amy (and one other intern applicant, I forget which one) can’t figure that out then they are not ready to deal with a blog.

  9. Dr. Jean Grey says:

BTW, I just visited this girl’s Twitter account to see if she actually could communicate in 140 words or less. I didn’t really get to see because I had to click away from the NSFW full-frontal nudity going on with her page. N-O.

  10. Katherine says:

Sorry, no. I wouldn’t trust her fashion advice.

  11. Rachel says:

Holy moley, don’t click her Twitter link at work!

  12. Ash says:

Absolutely not. Love her hair, but thats about it.

  13. Jessica says:

I like her and she has a refreshing attitude. The rant & rave format is a good idea I think.

I have to say, though, I’m a student myself so I didn’t stumble over that at first, but I do see the point raised her by others that you might want someone more rooted in a work environment.

I need to steal that hair though. and the hat 😉

  14. AS says:

Should have read the comments before I clicked on her twitter page. NSFW!!!! Amy- let people who clearly read this at work that you have an image of a fully naked woman on your twitter page. Belle, maybe add a heads up at the top of this post?? That is really bad…

Also, definite no vote based on her interview as well as her post. terrible writing, I have a hard enough time trying to make sense of the stream of consciousness I encounter in my inbox every day- CHS should not make me have to reread something 4 times to get what it is saying.

    Go Alison!

  15. gersemalina says:

I have really enjoyed the intern candidates’ profiles. Even though criticism is probably a natural part of this process, I appreciate the people who are putting themselves out there for this opportunity. Oh, and on this one, I like the line “My life is in my closet.”

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
