Intern Search: Meet Alison

Jul 14, 2010

Name(Pseudonym): Alison

Age: 22

Hometown: Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Profession/Major: I’m currently “funemployed”, otherwise known as a May graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with majors in journalism and political science, and a summer internship on the Hill.

Style Icon: Some sort of hybrid between Ali MacGraw and Carla Bruni.

Blog and/or Twitter Handlehttps://twitter.com/the_moser

Any special skills (Photoshop, CSS, etc.): I’m basically fluent in Illustrator and InDesign, and somewhat competent with Photoshop. I’ve grown up creating more traditional studio art, and I have long been a casual photographer, so I feel like I have a decent idea of basic composition, balance, weight, color, etc. Oh, and I also speak German, which I  based on The Cut’s coverage of Berlin Fashion Week.

Favorite Designer: Narciso Rodriguez.

Favorite Retail Line: Theory.

Favorite Piece in Your Wardrobe: A short, pinky-purple cotton and wool blend See by Chloé dress. It has short sleeves, a great big bow detail at the front, and a sort of chunky exposed zipper in back. It’s a little sexy and a little sweet, miraculously appealing to both my inner Dolores Haze and inner hausfrau.

Piece You are Currently Coveting: Jimmy Choo’s “Private” nude patent-leather sandals. In all likelihood, I would not be able to walk in them; but it would still be incredible just to see them sitting in my closet. And honestly, if you asked me this same question in ten years, I would probably still be coveting them – I’m more likely to donate a limb than pay $950 for a pair of shoes.

Jimmy Choo Patent Sandals (Net-a-Porter, $950)

Favorite Beauty/Skincare Product: Tom Ford for Men eau de toilette, although it is a little tiresome to have everyone you’re talking to tell the man you’re standing next to that he smells good.

It’s Friday night. Your phone rings. It’s Anna Wintour and she wants to take you to dinner.  Quick, what do you wear? A silk navy tie-waist sleeveless dress by Theory; a pair of chocolate suede hidden-platform pumps from Banana Republic, diamond studs; my grandmother’s gypsy ring; and a small gold leather clutch that was my great-grandmother’s. Makeup would be minimal, as always, and hair would be in a clean, low ponytail. That being said, I’m not sure I would accept her invitation; something tells me I wouldn’t impress her, and I can’t have that haunting my dreams.

In 200 words or less, tell us how you can contribute a fresh perspective to Capitol Hill Style: Life experiences are what dictate your perspectives, and I think my geographically and culturally diverse upbringing gives me a fresh point of view. I’ve lived in the mid-atlantic, spent summers on the west coast and in the northeast, and went to the southeast for undergrad, so my personal style is an odd and interesting mix of California cool, St. Grottlesex, and Ducks Unlimited. Extensive travel has also helped give me a perspective of beauty and style that I believe is unique.

In 140 characters, tell us why you want this internship: I take immense delight in style, both the artistic and utilitarian aspects of it, and I really like to talk about it.

She has a fantastic sense of humor and a concise, engaging way of writing that would add a lot to this blog. The other candidates so far pall in comparison!

  3. Stephanie says:

Okay. I’m sure Jessica is sweet, but you could find dozens of girls just like her at every single mall in America–she was too cookie-cutter (as was her pick for the woman-on-the-street feature. I think Jessica can recognize preppy, but not STYLE). But Alison? This girl is awesome. Seriously awesome. I got to the end of this post and wished there was more–she’s witty, engaging, practical, and you can definitely tell that she’s got a style that’s all her own. Now THAT is Cap Hill Style. Alison gets my vote, for sure.

  4. Jessi says:

Yay Alison – she’s my vote so far!

  5. Allison says:

LOVE ALISON! And not just because we share a name. Her style references reflect a developed sense of style. Carla Bruni and Ali MacGraw? I couldn’t agree more, but your average GW sorority girl wouldn’t come up with that.

  6. Dr. Jean Grey says:

Alison is now in the lead.

  7. M says:

Intelligent, in touch, unique, and (finally) stylish.

    Alison is in the lead.

  8. Angela says:

Allison is totally the best so far. Good writing, clean style. However, is there any one even remotely interesting who applied for this job? Sorority chic, while nice and trendy, is not, to me, style.

  9. Alice says:

LOVE. She’s got a great voice that conveys her personality without appearing to be pandering or campy. would have liked some pics, but hey.

  10. Andrea says:

I really like Alison!! She gets my vote!

  11. Meghan says:

THIS ONE. Namechecking Lolita by her full pseudonym, admitting ambivalence about expensive shoes, and turning down Anna Wintour? I am sold. If you don’t take her on, she better start a blog somewhere else for me to read.

  12. Janie Gray says:

Alison definitely gets my vote – forever chic, even in our brown and white seersucker camp uniforms!!

  13. Rosa In DC says:

I am sold! Alison would be a great addition to this blog.

  14. Settie Amini says:

This girl has a wicked sense of humor and the vocabulary of spelling bee champ. In all honesty, she is one of my best friends, but I can’t tell you how many times I trotted across the street in my crappy PJs to raid her closet. Vintage Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dresses, floaty Theory tops- not to mention all of the inexpensive hidden gems she has managed to unearth from some sweet place she has traveled to. She is one of the smartest people I know and has a well-rounded style that falls somewhere between classic and eclectic. We also took graphic design together and her Illustrator and InDesign skills are the bomb. She would definitely rock at fashion blogging.

  15. S says:

I agree with what everyone else has already said, but I might be a little biased as I am also a UNC-CH grad. Go Heels!

  16. cia says:

    Absolutely love her!

  17. Sarah says:

Intensely engaging! Clever writing style that makes me want to just keep reading and reading! yes, for sure!

  18. D says:

Awesome and witty. Alison needs to write for this blog. As a DC native, I find her voice intriguing and unique and I think she would introduce a unique perspective. LOVEEE

  19. Taryn says:

FUNemployed?! haha i love it. she’s amazing, i want more!

  20. k says:

She’s the one!! I don’t know a thing about fashion but I know Alison could teach me a lot… in an approachable, fun way. It’d be a mistake not to hire her.

  21. Joey says:

“An odd and interesting mix of California cool, St. Grottlesex, and Ducks Unlimited.”

    Um, I’m sold.

  22. Elizabeth says:

Please, please choose Alison! She’s original, yet approachable. And seriously, the Lolita reference? Fantastic.

  23. Lindsay says:

Maybe I’m biased because I’m a fellow (northern) Tar Heel, but Alison rocks!

  24. Elsie says:

Screw the internship, start your own blog! You have your first reader here

  25. D says:

Yay Alison! Great writing style, funny, quirky, unique.

  26. sGe says:

great voice. i love the writing style, but i’m sure about her fashion ideas yet. i’d love to see more from her though! her voice is most similar to the tone of the blog.

  27. amb says:

omg she’s my absolute favorite so far!! and i LOVE that she went to UNC but doesn’t follow the typical Chapel Hill trends of Lilly Pulitzer, Tory Burch, Jack Rogers theme. Not that those girls aren’t cute, because they are. They just don’t set the bar for me.

  28. mpg says:

Alison rocks! Love the way this girl writes– does the CHS brand justice!

  29. Caroline says:

Hilarious. Definitely going to have a huge fan base!

  30. jen says:

    she’s got my vote!

  31. Louise says:

Hands down – Alison! This girl has the most unique style of anyone I know. Whether she is going to a cocktial party or walking across campus, she always looks great and sometimes when she’s not even trying. She is always put together, and as another fellow neighbor of Alison, her closet is my first choice when looking to raid. Aside from her great sense of style and fashion, she is intelligent and always on top of everything. Easily one of the smartest people I know while also maintaining savviness in her demeanour. Alison is the one!

  32. hillybilly says:

    1) Nabokov references. Love.

    2) Her style icon is a cross between Ali MacGraw and Carla Bruni? Oh yes.

  33. Sarah says:

    Witty, refreshing and knowledgeable. Love!

  34. E says:

I really like her personality, voice and sass. Her post is funny and applicable to anyone from the age over 18 that’s had to nurse a hangover and still be respectable. My favorite so far!

  35. E says:

I really really like her voice. You can tell she has personality as well as a sense of style and she’s not afraid to show it. I’m also SOOOOO in love with the Jimmy Choo heels she picked out!

  36. Jh says:

By far the best of the 3 so far.

  37. jennifer says:

I love Allison, I am planning on stealing half her lines for my next interview! “Funemployed” thats brilliant!

  38. Meg says:

    Love her.

  39. Andrea says:

She has a fantastic sense of humor and a concise, engaging way of writing that would add a lot to this blog. The other candidates so far pall in comparison!

  40. Megan says:

    LOVE!

  41. ILoveAlison says:

Al, I want you to be my stylin pal. I wish I came up with funemployed!!!

  42. Mary says:

    Love. Her. So. Much.

  43. dm58 says:

I was intrigued with the “funemployed,” and she sealed the deal with her comment on Anna Wintour — love, love, love.

  44. Espie says:

Allison is my favorite. I think her style (both writing and fashion) will mesh well with the blog. I also enjoy that she’s a bit older, done with school and venturing to the professional world. I love this blogs sense of fashion and its perpetual fresh ideas for “professional chic”-I think Allison captures this, and adds her own twist.

  45. Hae says:

I LOVE this girl. She’s clearly got some spunk with a high level of intelligence, and a heck of a lot of honesty. I like that she covets that gorgeous pair of Jimmy Choo sandals, but she’s completely straightforward at her inability to pull the trigger. This is the first girl who has a writing style similar to Belle’s. She has wit, candor, and her answer to the question about meeting Anna Wintour made me laugh out loud. And, come on… who doesn’t have both an inner Dolores Haze and inner hausfrau?? I love it. I love her fashion sense, style, and sense of humor.

  46. Ash says:

I’m going to agree with everyone else. I really loved Alison’s post. She has great style and her writing is catchy. Love her!

  47. tr says:

same ol’ same ol’ if you ask me

  48. Taylor says:

Alison’s application and blog article were by far the most entertaining, truthful, and realistic. I would take her fashion advice anytime. And I would read her blogs just for fun!

  49. ack says:

YES! Fashion aside (ha), Alison’s editorial style is awesome. Witty without being clunky.

  50. kelly says:

    LOVE HER!!!

  51. Erica says:

She’s in love with the same shoes I have been secretly worshipping so my vote is for her too.

  52. Katherine says:

Now that all the posts are up, I have to say that I like Alison and Jaime the best.

  53. heather says:

    Best yet!

  54. kate says:

    Love Love Love Alison!
