Belle's Weekly Reading: Volume X

Jul 9, 2010

It’s been a busy week here in The Land of Belle.  I watched Miss M pledge to spend all eternity with another human being in a dress that deserved an award.  Seriously, she looked gorgeous.  Then I flew home for a week full of meetings and memo writing at Le Day Job.  I started a new business venture, a new workout routine (Yes, I went to a gym. Don’t pass out.), and began the process of hiring a new CHS intern(s).

Interns. After two weeks of accepting submissions, I received 65 (!) applications for the position of CHS intern. After reading and re-reading the letters of interest, I whittled the stack down to just seven candidates. Which means that with a nine-percent acceptance rate, I am officially more picky than an Ivy League college.

In the end, these seven had the fashion experience, the blogging experience, the tech savvy and the wit to capture my attention.  And starting next week, they will move into the second phase of their internship interview, creating original content for the blog.  I hope that you will take the time to comment on these posts when they appear, as I am looking for your feedback on what kind of content you would like to see on the site.

It’s a Tie Thing. Men, do you ever get sick of your tie blowing in the wind or falling into your lunch?  Prevent tie mania by purchasing a product called The Tie Thing that holds your cravat in place.  Frankly, I think the idea is genius, and I wish that I had patented it.

Glee! The television show Glee has taken America (and the Emmy nominating committee) by storm.  But even if singing disaffected teenagers aren’t your thing, you have to love the perfectly prim outfits that guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury wears.  And if you’ve ever wanted to know the secret to recreating her polished and pretty look, LuckyMag has a how-to guide that’s sure to please.

Skin So Soft. Still struggling to get your skin in shape for Summer?  Well, with August Recess right around the corner (Hoorah!), you still have time to get the soft, smooth skin that you always wanted.  The girls at Allure have a few simple tips that will condition your dermis without destroying your wallet.

Closet Caucus. While I may be starting a wardrobe consulting and closet editing business, The Glamourai wins the prize for greatest closet belonging to a non-celebrity.  I mean, the shoes alone!  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to clean the drool off of my keyboard.

Fall Preview.  If you’re obsessed with J.Crew like I am, you’ll want to check out their creative director’s 2010 Fall Preview video.  I’ve already picked out a dozen things that I must own.  And on a side note, I will probably spend all day tomorrow learning how to fishtail braid.

Don’t bother spending money on the Tie Thing. Take an old button down shirt, and cut out two button holes on one piece. Looks just the same as the Tie Thing, does the same job, and doesn’t cost a penny.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]

The Find: My Best Workout Shorts

For eight years, I have worn the same workout shorts. Every year, an influencer tries to sell me new shorts. I order them. I try them on. They pale in comparison to the shorts I already own. I return them.
