Faux Pas: What a Load of Crop

Jun 24, 2010

In fashion, everything old is eventually new again.  Neon and shoulder pads crawled back from the perdition known as 1985.  Kurt Cobain’s signature plaid has made an appearance or two over the seasons reviving the Grunge look.  And fashionistas the world over are embracing the clog (just not this fashionista) as the perfect summer shoe.

One of the more recent trends to pop up on the fashion radar is cropped tanks like the one at left, prompting Meghan at CHS Favorite Wit & Whimsy to ask a single Bard-like question: To Crop or not to Crop?

And the answer is definitely, absolutely, positively not

Unless, of course, you are going to make a cameo appearance on the next episode of COPS.

Even on the waifish model, the trend isn’t figure flattering.  In fact, it looks downright trashy.  The only possible exception to this might be if you wore a black silk tank and a pair of very high waisted pants so there was no midriff, hair up, gold jewelry, cage sandals–you know the full Sloane from Entourage, California cool look.

Bottom line, the only time you should be flashing your abdomen is poolside in a bikini.

    Amen!

Ok so we’ve suffered through a 2nd round of the eighties (oh, don’t tell me you loved the acid wash denim leggins?!), do we really need to go into the painful teenage memories that are the nineties and midriff baring tops? I’m begging please no!

(anon on purpose … can’t take the upcoming shame) Is it sad that part of me wants Spice Girl boots to come back into style because they’re at least REALLY comfortable on long walks and they make me taller? Feel free to ridicule now. (I don’t think I’d actually wear them except on Halloween …)

I’m in New York, and I saw two girls on the subway the other day wearing cropped tops, and under them they had a lace top (think the things american apparel would sell). It was horrible. Some trends should stay thoroughly dead.

The answer to selling more clothes during America’s obesity epidemic is crop tops?

I’m glad Classic is always in style, it helps me to avoid those trends that should die a morbid death.
