Belle's Weekly Reading: Volume VII

Jun 18, 2010

The image at left is from Oscar de la Renta’s 2011 Resort Collection.  If you want to see more of the glorious designs, including some incredible evening wear, visit Taryn Cox’s fabulous blog.

As a hazel-eyed girl, I’ve always been a huge fan of purple eyeshadow.  So I was thrilled to see that Glamour has pronounced hazy, purple eyeshadow a trend on the return.  Need a shade recommendation?  I like M.A.C. beautiful Iris.

Father’s Day is Sunday.  If you still don’t have a gift for your Dad, you should consult The Glamazon Diaries gift guide.  These gifts would be perfect for an Urband Dad, but if you’ve got a country boy like mine, you should probably give the Cabela’s catalog a look.

Meghan D. from CHS favorite Wit & Whimsy is also a guest contributor to the Linea Pelle blog.  Her latest post examines Spring beauty trends including how to brighten up your eyes.  This knowledge is essential for Hill staffers who are planning to hit up the Summer party circuit.

After my recent Spring cold, I’ve been washing my hands like a mad, OCD-afflicted woman.  This has left them a bit dry.  So for you Metro riders who’d like sanitized mitts without the split cuticles, try Clean’s anti-bacterial hand cream.

Lastly today, a short rant.  I HATE American Apparel.  There, I said it.  And I won’t apologize.  Dov Charney is a reprehensible human being who perpetuates the worst stereotypes about our culture (that beauty is only rail thin) to sell gold lame panties to over-sexualized teenagers because it’s “cool.”  I really hope he loses his many pending discrimintation cases and winds up destitute.  That’s right ladies, Dov Charney has now surpassed Julia Allison on Belle’s S**t List.

If you’d like to read more about what a despicable jackass Charney is, read here.  I dare you to shop at American Apparel, without feeling like a blood traitor, after reading the article.

And now, for this week’s inspirational quote:  “Sex appeal is fifty percent what you’ve got and fifty percent what people think you’ve got.”  -Sophia Loren

I actually worked at American Apparel for a year. The only dress code we had was to wear AA clothing, sometimes employees were given free articles of clothing to take home and were encouraged to then wear them to work to promote a particular item. There were no guidelines whatsoever on makeup/hair/grooming, other than employees were to appear neat and clean. Almost all of our employees at the time had multiple (and visible) tattoos and piercings, plenty had hair dyed unnatural colors, and everyone wore makeup. It seemed like they were actually encouraging the more scenester, club-kid look at the time. Weird how it’s changed so much.

I read the posted link for American Apparel. Didn’t it actually defend AA? I don’t understand how AA is doing anythin more egregious than the other profiled retail stores. Is he an ass simply because he is so controlling that he wants to see EVERY employee’s picture? Perhaps that is why he is so successful? I agree with the commentors who noted that AA protects its image and brand just like all other retailers — of course, AA’s image is perverted, etc., but don’t you know that when you apply for a position there?

The Beauty Edit: An Under-Eye Concealer That Actually Works

My dark under eye circles have been the bane of my existence since I was 12. Is the cause lack of sleep? Dehydration? Sinus issues? Stress? Who the hell knows. But there they are, every day, telling the world that I am an exhausted working Mom.

Sloane loves the pool. She jumps from the deck into the water with a crash, never considering her own safety, only to emerge on the surface, shouting “Again!” The pool is my daughter’s happy place. But no place where I need to wear a swimsuit in public is a happy one for me.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
