Ask Belle: Cocktail Does Daytime

Jun 14, 2010

At least once a week, I receive a question from a reader who is curious about new uses for their cocktail attire.  Unfortunately, most cocktail dresses are unsuitable for daytime wear.  The only exception to this rule are chiffon dresses without much embellishment.  Here are two ways to repurpose a chiffon evening gown for daytime wear.

Pretty and Professional

Gestuz Double Breasted Jacket (Asos, $170)

Carmen Marc Valvo Chiffon Dress (Bluefly, $264)

Elastic Belt (Forever 21, $4)

You can use a simple elastic belt to cover waist embellishments on most evening wear.  Layering over a soft blush colored jacket lightens the black and white palette and creates something that is appropriate for daytime.  Add a simple patent leather shoe and patent leather bag and you’re on your way.

Soft and Simple

Anna Molinari Printed Dress (TheOutnet, $614)

Bamboo Belt (Coldwater Creek, $15)

Faryl Robin Dakota Sandal (Zappos, $168)

By adding a casual belt and sandals, you bring the dress down to sidewalk level.  Add a raffia tote and you can brunch al fresco while looking fabulous.

Sloane loves the pool. She jumps from the deck into the water with a crash, never considering her own safety, only to emerge on the surface, shouting “Again!” The pool is my daughter’s happy place. But no place where I need to wear a swimsuit in public is a happy one for me.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
