Belle's Weekly Reading: Volume III

May 14, 2010

Jealousy. Sometimes, I come across a blog post or a web article and I think, “Damn, I wish I wrote that.”  This is how I felt about the post Washington, D.C. to Meghan McCain, “Bitch, Please!” on 2BIRDS1blog.

This last statement is enraging on so many levels. Let’s break it down, shall we?

First of all, we get it Meghan McCain. DC is full of ugly people. We’re all brunette and boring and homely and plain and we’ve never kissed a boy and we’re still waiting to get our period and we all know we’re never going to get asked to the dance this weekend so we might as well just tell Mrs. Friedenberg that, yes, we are free to babysit Saturday night. We get it. Ugly.

And the whole post is just an amazingly awesome screed chronicling how someone (McCain) who has been so vocal about not being judged by her appearance has no trouble judging every woman in D.C. The best line in the whole post: “Is hypocrisy the new black?”  Definitely worth a read.

A Post for the Gentlemen. Tying a tie is an art form.  So if you’re still wearing a clip on or you never moved beyond the half-Windsor, Urlesque has an excellent post (with video tutorial) about how to master other knots.

Fresh Faced. Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford hosted the Today Show yesterday without a stitch of makeup on their faces.  A bold choice to be sure.  And while I’ve never warmed up to Kathie Lee, I appreciate her attempt to make women everywhere feel better about going au naturale.

Chemical Exposure.  As consumers become more savvy about the chemicals in their makeup, some perfumers are concealing which chemicals are in their products by leaving the ingredients off of the label.  Jezebel reports that some of the worst offenders: Clinique Happy, Chanel Coco and Axe Body Spray.

All That Glitters Ain’t Gold. Also in the caveat emptor catrgory is a report from Wit & Whimsy that Banana Republic’s affordable “gold” jewelry is actually gold plated.  Given that I own a significant number of BR pieces (my fingers are covered in them right now), I’m a bit disappointed.  But I have yet to own a piece that turned my skin green so we’ll see how strong my disappointment is in a few months.

The Find: A Versatile Sweater Jacket

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
