Spring 2010: Five Dresses You Can Actually Afford

Mar 22, 2010

Spring is all about dresses.  There’s nothing simpler than throwing on a colorful, easy dress and heading out into the bright, sunshiny world.

The warm weather frees me from the arduous task of coordinating outfits.  I simply select a dress, a pair of shoes and some jewelry and head to work.  I imagine that this is what it is like to be a man: easy.

Here are five essential spring dresses that can be purchased for under $125.  Enjoy!

The Floral Dress

BB Dakota Pia Voile Dress (Piperlime, $80)

Every woman needs a pretty floral dress, even if the only place she ever wears it is to tea with Nana.

The Shirtdress

Reed Shirtdress (Anthropologie, $118)

The shirtdress is a classic shape that is perfect for casual Fridays and weekend dinner dates.

The Racerback Maxi

Racerback Tank Dress (Forever 21, $17)

This is the dress that I throw on when I head neighborhood errands or I need a pool cover-up.

The Brightly Printed Dress

Maggy London Jersey Shift Dress (Nordstrom, $98)

While this print is a bit garish, it is this kind of bright, sartorial idealism that is perfect for spring/summer.  It’s like wearing a sign that says, “Our national nightmare is over. Welcome Spring!”

The Basic Black Sheath

AGB Solid Shift (Bonton, $60)

Every woman needs a basic black sheath dress.  Pair it with a statement necklace or a patterned sweater and you have an easy outfit for those mornings when the alarm just goes off too early.

Do you think bare arms are OK for work in a sleeveless option like your black dress (aside from the potential arctic chill from over-A/C-ed offices)? I have a lot of sleeveless dresses but I grew tired of always wearing cardigans in the winter!

  2. Donna says:

What kind of shoe would you wear with a maxi dress?

  3. Anna says:

    Love the Maggy London!

  4. Belle says:

M- I think bare arms are fine. I just get cold so I need a sweater or a jacket.

Donna- You could wear a sandal or an open toe flat like these : https://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=661688012&tid=plfr1r

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
