Faux Pas: Clog it Up

Mar 19, 2010

A few weeks ago, Miss M and I were imbibing at the W’s rooftop lounge when a tourist strolled past in ankle pants and clogs.  M tapped my shoulder, and I silently nodded my agreement that this women was clearly deranged. Then, Miss M added, “Too bad those awful shoes are coming back into style.”

I was aghast.  Clogs?  Back in style?  No chance!

Miss M then procured the Glamour magazine from her purse and confirmed my worst fears, the fashion powers-that-be were advocating a pro-clog position.  It was like finding out that your favorite celebrity is a member of NAMBLA, devastating.

How can the fashion industry support the wearing of clogs?  Especially high-heeled clogs.  I mean, have you seen these?

How about these?

Or these hideous things complete with shearling insole?

How could any sane, stylish person stand up on behalf of clogs?  It’s like being for the murder of baby seals, it’s just not an acceptable position.  So unless you’re Dutch or you time-traveled here from 1969, don’t waste your money on a shoe that will cause your friends, family and co-workers to mock you until you cry.  I’m just looking out for your fiscal and emotional well-being, we are in the middle of a recession after all.

Thank you! I am so glad to see someone finally stand up and talk about the ugly, unnecessaryness of clogs! Why oh why are these shoes considered stylish? It is a travesty.

  2. CatG says:

Ugh, thank you. I was just having this convo with a friend the other day. Unless you are living in a part of the world with habitually extremely muddy (read:unpaved) streets, there’s just no excuse for clogs.

  3. ComeOnVogue says:

the simple fact is, you showed ugly versions of the clog. There are some amazing ones out there. I think its a breath of fresh air.

  4. Belle says:

Find me a fresh, awesome looking clog and post the link. You can’t make an argument like that without evidence to back it up.

  5. Meghan says:

oh miss belle- once again we are so in sync https://witwhimsy.com/?p=3168 😉

  6. Valerie says:

I HATE clogs and they are suddenly being promoted in all of the magazines & fashion blogs that I read (except this one, obv). Nooooooooooooooooooo 🙁

  7. Belle says:

I agree. The offer still stands for Come on Vogue or anyone else to provide a link to a cool clog…interested minds want to know.

A cool clog: https://loveatfirstshop.blogspot.com/2010/03/just-clogging-around.html Of course it’s all a matter of taste, but I like the understated feminine clog she is wearing from Anthropologie. I think the simple dress and jewelry keeps it from being tacky. Although, I assume some people will just hate clogs by definition, I like some little risks. (You do have to be sure you don’t end up looking like an Olsen twin with the clogs though!) https://www.focusonstyle.com/var/fos/storage/images/focusonstyle.com/trends/fashion/stylish-clogs-you-will-want-them/45909-1-eng-US/Stylish-Clogs-you-will-want-them_feature_article_horizontal.jpg I also love pretty much anything Chanel, Karl speaks I listen. While I wouldn’t wear the wrap ones, I like that he is feminizing them for Spring. I think that’s what makes them "cool" clogs rather than tacky, feminine touches, like the Anthropologie cut out.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
