State of the Blog: Beating the Burn Out

Mar 1, 2010

Burnt-Out, adj.: exhausted as a result of longtime stress; destroyed or badly damaged by fire; see also, Belle

This weekend, I spent nearly a full day working on posts for Spring Fashion Week 2010.  I researched.  I wrote.  I scoured the Interwebs for lapis jewelry, nude dresses and fringed bags.  But when I went back to edit the posts, I realized that they weren’t very good.

In fact, they could be charitably described as garbage.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what is going on here.  I work twelve to fourteen hours per day at a job that vacillates between busy and post-apocalyptic.   And then I spend my limited free time penning three blog posts per day, five days per week, 50 weeks per year.

Translation: Belle needs a break.

Many of you will be understandably disappointed.  But the solution is either a short break or closing Capitol Hill Style entirely.  I’m trying to avoid the latter by indulging in the former.

I also have high hopes that after a little time off to rest and renew that I will return to the Interwebs with my creativity restored.  Even someone as opinionated as I am will eventually run out of things to talk about. And if working on the Hill has taught me anything, it is that the only way to beat perpetual burn-out is to step off the wheel and take a rest.

As a result, posting will be sporadic but not non-existent for the rest of this week.  At a minimum, there will be a 10th Commandment post each morning.  On Sunday, Capitol Hill Style will be hosting it’s regular Academy Awards Red Carpet live blog starting at 6:00PM.  And then next week, we will begin CHS Spring Fashion Week 2010.

I apologize to those of you who read here every day and use the content on this blog as a daily diversion from the stresses of Capitol Hill, K Street, and Pennsylvania Avenue.  But I will be back soon to shower you with faux pas numerous and fashion trends a plenty.

xoxo

Belle

P.S. And to those of you who have already rushed to your Gmail accounts to pen a screed about how I am selfish to complain about my work load or take a few days away, go start your own blog. They’re free.

Take a much needed break for a month. Don’t shut down the blog completely, I had the same feelings about my blog and took a month long "sabbatical" and came back ready and willing to write. You do not want to force your posts just because you want to satisfy readers. Limit your posts to once a week or maybe even once every two weeks for a while. Believe me, it really helps. I love the blog 🙂 I have been where you are at, it is hard, but do what’s best for you.

We will miss you Belle, but I hope the time off helps. And a week doesn’t sound like enough time to recharge batteries….so, just take as much time as you need!

I am 3K miles from Capitol Hill, here in Silicon Valley and have to let you know that Capitol Hill Style is a welcome refuge from a killer schedule where the subject matter can be excruciatingly dry. I love reading this blog, but am especially glad you’re taking the downtime you need to keep going. Keep that valuable voice viable by resting it when you have to. Thanks for letting your readers know. REST!!

  4. ~M says:

    How DARE you!

Just kidding, a short (hopefully) break can make a world of difference. If we don’t have 10th Commandments for a week we’ll all live.

  5. Jenna says:

    Hey Belle!

I’m a longtime reader/lurker and I totally support the break (I mean, I’ll miss reading, but that’s okay). Like, I think self-care is totally important with blogging – just like you need a vacation from work, you need vacations from blogging. Last year I took a three week break from my blog and it was actually great – when I came back I was so excited about it again, and I think it helped the quality of the blog. So take all the time you need. We’ll be waiting when you come back.

Feel better soon… it would be a personal tragedy for me if Capitol Hill Style closed for good!

  8. Lou says:

Do what you need to do. I don’t know how you were able to post as much as you were. It’s a lot of work to be fresh, relevant and interesting. I applaud your blog and your need to rest. Take care.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
